🐴 Why Saddle Size Matters — Especially for Young Horses
For young horses, it’s not just about saddle fit — the size, length, and bulk of the saddle make a huge difference. A saddle that’s too big, too long, or too bulky can do more harm than good.
An oversized saddle often shifts its balance onto the lumbar area — a part of the back that is not meant to carry weight. When the saddle extends too far behind the horse’s natural support area, it can restrict the hips and the movement of the hip bones, making it harder for the horse to step under, push from behind, and stay balanced.
Heavy or bulky saddles also limit shoulder and back freedom. But a young horse needs maximum mobility to learn balance, coordination, and correct body mechanics. When that freedom is restricted, they start to brace, hollow, rush, or move defensively simply because they’re uncomfortable.
A young horse’s body is still developing. A saddle that is the right size, light enough, and allows full range of motion helps them build confidence, healthy muscle memory, and correct movement from day one.
✨ A good start begins with a saddle that truly fits.
