Some German Shepherd facts you may or may not know.... But we are going to tell you anyway because Enjoy and Share if you love German Shepherd's!

When Stephanitz and Meyer saw a 4-year-old dog with a wolf-like appearance at a German dog show in 1899, they bought it for 200 German gold marks. Naming it โ€œHorand von Grafrath,โ€ the dog became the foundation of the German Shepherd Dog. The โ€œvonโ€ in a GSDโ€™s name suggests German noble ancestry.

Unsurprisingly, the German Shepherd Dog has remained in the top 10 of the most popular breeds in the U.S. for decades.

โ€œBuddy,โ€ a German Shepherd Dog, became a Seeing Eye Dog for Morris Frank in 1928, the dog helped establish the service dog movement in the U.S.

With energy and endurance to spare combined with an active mind, GSDs need a lot of activity to keep them occupied. They are quick learners who are eager to please and enjoy conformation, Herding, Dock Diving, Flyball, AKC Rally, obedience, therapy, tracking, and agility. Once at home, the German Shepherd Dog is happy to relax but always keeps a watchful eye for any intruders.

What was your guess? Did you know Puppies have naturally short attention spans, usually only a few seconds or minutes, because their brains are still developing and they are constantly distracted by their environment. You can improve a puppy's focus through short, engaging training sessions (around 5-10 minutes), gradual increases in difficulty and distractions, and consistent use of positive reinforcement. Ending sessions positively and backing off if a puppy becomes overwhelmed will help them learn and avoid negative associations with training. Patience is your best friend when it comes to training a puppy!

This Friday we want to talk about something every dog owner should know about. .

Its a deadly issue common in deep chested dogs and even some that are not...however sometimes for reasons unknown all dogs can be potentially inflected with this medical emergency. This condition is fatal in a few hrs and required expensive invasive surgery that is not always a guarantee. Even if the dog survives he is then even more susceptible to it happening again in the future. Your dog could die if not taken immediately to a vet.

Here are some warning signs to keep an eye out for so maybe to catch it if it does happen and get them to the vet quickly along with some tips so hopefully we keep the chances lower to it happening in the 1st place.

Excessive panting even though the dog is cool and calm, an enlarged stomach that is not a normal size and hard when gently pushed, not wanting to stand, restlessness and unease, dog separating itself from other members of the home and seeking a dark quite corner or hiding spot, coughing or hacking but nothing coming up, purple gums and this is sometimes harder to tell on dogs with dark gums. These are just some of the signs you should watch out for.
Whats going on inside potentially or in some combination thereon is the stomach has twisted over itself cutting of blood and oxygen essentially causing multiple organ failure and death within a few hours.
TIPS TO INCREASE PREVENTION
Feed smaller potions multiple times a day instead of always leaving food out or feeding a huge bowl of food once a day. The stomach is much like a thin plastic grocery bag and the less matter filling the bag at any given time the less chances of the stomach flipping and swinging around causing a problem.

Feed quality foods that don't cause you dog to inure more gas. If you notice a food that makes you dog fart or they look a little bloated talk to your vet about an another option and make sure its a better fit for your dogs health.

Make your dogs rest at least 1 hour and 45 mins 2 hours is ideal of rest time after every feeding. No running, jumping, playing, excitement or excessive movement while the digestive process is taking place.

Have a talk with your veterinarian and ask them questions specifically about this issue and risks that your particular dog may have. They are a wealth of information and that could save your dogs life!

Have you had a dog pass-away of stomach flip? Share you experiences below and share this post and help us raise awareness!
