🐾 Gut Health Is Foundational to Your Pet’s Overall Health
The gastrointestinal tract does so much more than digest food. It interacts with the immune system, metabolism, nervous system, skin, and even behavior. Inside the intestinal tract lives an entire community of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms known as the gut microbiome.
When the gut is healthy, these microorganisms work together with the intestinal lining to:

🐾 Support nutrient absorption
🐾 Produce beneficial compounds
🐾 Help regulate the immune system
🐾 Protect against harmful organisms
🐾 Support the intestinal barrier
🐾 Communicate with the brain and nervous system

So why is gut health so important?
Digestion and nutrition
A healthy GI tract helps break down food and absorb amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. An animal can eat an excellent diet but still have problems if digestion or absorption is impaired.
Immune regulation
The gut is an important part of immune function. Gut microbes and intestinal immune cells continually communicate, helping the body distinguish between normal dietary and environmental exposures and genuine threats.
The intestinal barrier
The intestinal lining helps control what moves from the digestive tract into the body. Maintaining a healthy intestinal barrier is important for normal immune and inflammatory regulation.
Skin and allergies
The gut, immune system, and skin communicate with one another. Researchers are increasingly studying changes in the microbiome in animals with allergic and inflammatory skin conditions. Gut health isn't a cure for allergies, but it can be an important part of the bigger picture.
Brain and behavior
The gut-brain axis provides two-way communication between the gastrointestinal tract, microbiome, nervous system, endocrine system, and brain.
Veterinary researchers are continuing to investigate relationships between the microbiome and stress, anxiety, cognition, and behavior.
Inflammation
The microorganisms living in the gut produce substances called metabolites. Some of these, including short-chain fatty acids produced when certain bacteria ferment fiber, can influence intestinal cells and immune signaling throughout the body.
Resilience after illness or medication
Antibiotics, illness, major dietary changes, stress, and other factors can alter the microbiome. Supporting appropriate nutrition and digestive health during recovery can therefore be an important part of supporting the whole animal.
