All too often our dogs are minutes away from euthanasia due to age, medical issues, or to free up space for more incoming dogs. Here at Lucky Dog all dogs deserve a chance at life; no matter age o

Lucky Dog Small Breed Rescue has moved to a new location, so that means new windows ✨

Can't skip out on some trash kitties, but remember, if you spay/neuter your pets, you reduce the amount of animals who struggle to survive on the streets. Especially as we head into kitten season, be responsible and help stop the over population of feral cats!

Best of luck to you Gabby at 610 Fond du Lac St, Fond du Lac, WI!!

TNR is controversial, but years of people trying to euthanize or relocate their way out of the feral population has led to what? Nothing, nada, no change, no progress... just a never ending revolving door of new kittens being born into a feral population or (as bad or even worse) an over full and over stressed shelter population.
There is this thing that's called the vacuum effect. For every one you take out of a location... another (intact) is coming, or being born, in.
And so now we try TNR... let's see if that makes a difference.
When I talk about feral cats and TNR, I am talking about cats who were born wild in the city, who have never had human contact, or the limited contact of their working the humans for a free meal and a little oportunistic assistance.
TNR is about getting them fixed, fully vaccinated, ear tipped, and microchipped, so we can track if they come back in the system.
TNR is also about systematically reducing the population, ending the never ending flow of new kittens, and ending the "intact behaviors" that get them in trouble... yowling, fighting, marking, threatening, harrasing owned pets, and chasing each other out in front of cars.
Mother Nature is very kind to cats. She gives them winter coats and weathered skin. Cats are survivors, and rarely will you ever hear of a cat being found frozen or heat exhausted... people's owned cats that snuck out... yes... feral cats... no.
Lock them up in a cage? They will shut down, die or be euthanized... aaaaand vacuum effect! We have another intact cat exactly where that cat was taken from.
Relocate a city cat on a farm? They will be chased off by the resident cats, chased out in front of cars, lost and alone in unfamiliar territory... or face the really well fed coyote population.... aaaand vacuum effect. We have another intact cat exactly where that cat was taken from.
And before someone jumps my butt... neither of those two non-solutions do anything for the birds.
Are there times when cats need to be relocated? Yes, but that is the exception... not the rule.
TNR is new. Will it work? We don't know, but nothing will ever be for a lack of trying.
I saw another organization recently asking for pregnant feral cats and their kittens. Maybe what we have done for the last year is actually working. In over 30 years, I don't ever remember asking for them. I remember doing a lot of begging to help us get bailed out from under them. You know what I do want? No more fluffy nuggets being born into a system of homelessness. Wouldn't it be a wonderful world if the only animals in the homeless system... were the ones who truly need to be there. Thank you for your support.
