Really pi**ed right now… About 15 years ago when I began getting seriously into digital photography, I learned about what an amazing place the Galapagos is for nature photography. But it seemed out of my reach to travel there. Until recently… we made plans a couple of years ago for this trip then nailed it all down last year. I then bought my dream camera body in December; a Canon R5 Mk II. Even bought a new RF 70-200 lens for it. I was so looking forward to filling my memory cards with amazing photos. Even spent a few hundred bucks on an extra 512G card in case I ended up taking more than 10,000 shots or so. I had considered bringing an extra camera body, but brought 3 different lenses instead. Then today my camera essentially froze up while shooting, giving me this error message. The simple fixes I researched didn’t solve it: trying another battery, taking the battery and memory cards out, turning it on and off, etc. I’ve probably shot over 10,000 photos with this camera since I got it and never had an issue. I have several other Canon bodies that are years old and have never failed me, and now this on the day before we arrive on the Galápagos Islands. The problem seems to be with a shutter that will need an expert repair. Unfortunately that will have to wait until I return home. I did manage to get some good bird photos yesterday, but my whole goal in coming here was for the photography on the Islands.

For our upcoming trip to Ecuador, I'm told that one of our days will involve seeing several species of hummingbirds. I'm looking forward to that, as well as the rest of the trip, but for now here are a couple of shots of an Anna's Hummingbird from my back yard a few minutes ago. Every year about this time, our big aloe plant produces these blooms which attract the hummers.

I never got around to posting all of my photos from my trip to Peru last fall. I'll be heading to South America again in a couple of weeks, so I figured I'd put these out there. The location here is just above the city of Cusco, Peru at a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Sacsayhuamán. Pronunciation is strangely similar to "sexy woman". This is one of those amazing structures like Stonehenge or Göbekli Tepe. Actually quite a bit more amazing than Stonehenge when you consider the enormity of it and the complexity of the construction. There's a lot of disagreement as to how allegedly primitive people constructed monuments which we would have difficulty replicating today with modern equipment. The most fascinating thing about Sacsayhuaman is the degree of precision with which these giant boulders (weighing several tons) were precisely fitted together in such a way that you could not slip a business card between them. Graham Hancock has an interesting series on Netflix called Ancient Apocalypse in which he devotes a couple of episodes to this location. We spent a couple of days in Cusco, at an elevation of about 11,000 feet, prior to visiting Sacsayuaman, which sits about a thousand feet higher above the city. Needless to say, it was breathtaking!

RIP Mert Lawwill. Autographed pencil drawing here that I got from Bay Area artist Mike Gorrono. As a kid growing up riding motorcycles in the 70s, Lawwill’s legendary status was well known to me.

Photos are now on my website from the CZ World Championships on Sunday. Nearly 1000 photos made the final cut. Here are a few more samples in this post, but the link to the page on my website is shown below. Your purchases of digital downloads and prints helps to keep me coming back to these events! Next year I hope to be there on Saturday as well, so that I can meet some more of you and maybe photograph some post-vintage as well.

Here are a few more image from Sunday's CZ World Championship races at MMX Racing. I should be done with the editing process on the rest of the photos by the end of the week, at which time I'll post them on my website for anyone who would like to purchase digital downloads or print. Heck, I think you can even get a mouse pad with your image on it.

Here are a few samples of my photos from yesterday's races at MMX Racing in Marysville, CA. Assorted vintage classes competed, including the 2026 CZ World Championship. Feel free to like, comment, and share! I'm still going through the editing process for all of them and when ALL the photos are done I'll post them on my website for anyone who would like to purchase full size, high resolution downloads or prints.

Every couple of years or so, one of these red dragonflies comes to hang out in our backyard. When they do, I have to pull out my macro lens. Funny how even when you get their face in perfect focus, the eyes always look a bit soft.

One last round of photos from the Hooked on Driving track day at Laguna Seca last Saturday. There were a lot more cars out there than the ones pictured here, but I only photographed the two fastest groups, otherwise I'd end up with way too many photos! This batch was shot at the Corkscrew.

The Ray Charles Project last night at the Empress Theater in Vallejo. These guys shouldn't require any introduction, as they are current and former members of some well known bands (Santana, Tower of Power, Robert Cray, Etta James, etc.) as well as successful solo artists. But if this is the first time you've hear about them, they are: Tony Lindsay (vocals), Glenn Walters (vocals), Dewayne Pate (bass), David K. Mathews (keyboards), Kevin Hayes (drums), and Chris Cain (guitar). Lots of talent on that stage, performing the songs of Ray Charles. A good time was had by all.
