My wife and I attended a mushroom cultivation workshop at the end of June, where we learned a bit and also mixed up a couple of bags of substrate (straw) with the necessary spawn(?) to grow some oyster mushrooms. We took the two bags home where I waited eagerly for them to produce some edible mushrooms. Here are some photos of them during the various stages. The two bags had very different timelines, as one appears ready for the first harvest at 42 days, while the other is just now beginning to show some little baby mushrooms. I think they are fascinating subjects to photograph!

Galapagos 2026: Frigatebirds! Yes, that's supposed to be written as one word. One of the more interesting sights in the Galapagos, particularly when the males are trying to attract a mate by puffing air into the red membrane that inflates to give them the appearance of a giant heart popping out of their chest. At time, they were very thick in the surrounding shrubs on some of the islands we were on. The females don't have that red membrane, as I understand it. When our boat was traveling on the ocean from one location to another, the frigatebirds liked to fly alongside us, sometimes landing on the boat itself in order to hitch a ride. One of the fellow travelers (Alexis Olson) in our group had the presence of mind to use his cell phone to capture a short video of one male at close range and was able to record the interesting sounds that he was making in his attempt to woo a female. On our first full day in Ecuador, while staying at the Hotel Mama Cuchara in Quito, my wife and I got a private tour of the neighborhood which included visits to local mask maker Alberto Avila and a working convent and church (Convento de Santo Domingo) which included an extensive library of rare religious texts in various languages. Here is just a sample of some of the wildlife we were able to witness in the Galapagos. Perhaps the most amazing thing is not just the abundance of different species that you can encounter there, but the fact that most of them are pretty indifferent to the presence of humans. Aside from the photography I was able to do (using a loaner camera and lenses due to a technical issue with my own equipment), our 10-day voyage at sea included a lot of snorkeling which allowed us to swim among penguins, sea turtles, flightless cormorants, sea lions, reef sharks, marine iguanas, and scores of beautiful tropical fish. I don't have the gear for underwater photography, but several of my fellow travelers were able to get some amazing videos of our snorkeling adventures, using relatively low cost video cameras like Go-Pros and Insta 360s. I've done my best to identify the animals in the photos here, but if anyone can offer any corrections, feel free to comment.

Here are a few more photos from our trip to Ecuador, prior to flying to the Galapagos for a ten-day voyage on a boat. Most of these were taken at the Bellavista Clous Forest Reserve, which is a couple of hours outside of Quito. The last 12 kilometers is along a twisty, bumpy, often muddy unpaved road. A special bonus for my wife and I was the fact that our driver was an avid birder who stopped at his home to show us his back yard where he had multiple hummingbird feeders and food that was set out to attract other types of birds native to the area. Ecuador has over 300 species of hummingbirds!

Just returned from nearly three weeks in Ecuador which included ten days at sea in the Galapagos. I posted previously about my camera failure when my Canon R5 MKII locked up on me the day we were preparing to leave Quito to head to the Galapagos. I did manage to get a few nice bird photos in the cloud forest before that happened. Here's a sneak preview. This particular bird is a Toucan Barbet. Semnornis ramphastinus for you bird geeks.

Really pi**ed right now… About 15 years ago when I began getting seriously into digital photography, I learned about what an amazing place the Galapagos is for nature photography. But it seemed out of my reach to travel there. Until recently… we made plans a couple of years ago for this trip then nailed it all down last year. I then bought my dream camera body in December; a Canon R5 Mk II. Even bought a new RF 70-200 lens for it. I was so looking forward to filling my memory cards with amazing photos. Even spent a few hundred bucks on an extra 512G card in case I ended up taking more than 10,000 shots or so. I had considered bringing an extra camera body, but brought 3 different lenses instead. Then today my camera essentially froze up while shooting, giving me this error message. The simple fixes I researched didn’t solve it: trying another battery, taking the battery and memory cards out, turning it on and off, etc. I’ve probably shot over 10,000 photos with this camera since I got it and never had an issue. I have several other Canon bodies that are years old and have never failed me, and now this on the day before we arrive on the Galápagos Islands. The problem seems to be with a shutter that will need an expert repair. Unfortunately that will have to wait until I return home. I did manage to get some good bird photos yesterday, but my whole goal in coming here was for the photography on the Islands.
