This is one of my go-to exercises, and I use it for SO much more than just teaching leash walking!

I also use it as a warm-up with my own dogs to get them loosened up, engaged, and focused on me before we start training.

Movement keeps dogs engaged and excited about the exercise rather than simply going through the motions.

When we make obedience fun and build a strong history of engagement, our dogs are much more likely to carry those skills outside of the game and into real-world situations.

If youโ€™ve trained with me before, youโ€™ve probably heard me use this term.

Whether you have an anxious dog, a reactive dog, a brand-new puppy, or one you just rescued, Iโ€™m probably going to tell you that your training needs to be ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒโ€”because dogs donโ€™t live well in the gray area.

So when I say that, what exactly do I mean?

It means your training needs to be ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, almost 100% of the time.

The same behavior should always get the same response from you. The same action a dog takes should consistently lead to the same outcome. A command cannot mean one thing today and something completely different tomorrow.

We should all understand this in theory. How many times have we gotten frustrated when someoneโ€™s expectations of us constantly change?

Now imagine those changing expectations were coming from someone you didnโ€™t speak the same language as, and all you really had to understand them were their body language, tone, and a handful of words that had been conditioned over time.

For example, imagine that every day before today, someone said โ€œhelloโ€ to you in a friendly tone. Youโ€™ve learned that โ€œhelloโ€ means something positive.

Then, for whatever reason, today they say โ€œhelloโ€ in an angry tone. Their body language is tense. Their expression is different. Suddenly, you have no idea what โ€œhelloโ€ means anymore.

Youโ€™re probably going to spend the rest of the day thinking about that interaction.

That uncertainty is exactly what we create for our dogs when we are inconsistent.

One day, youโ€™ve had a great day. You come home, your dog is excited to see you, and youโ€™re excited to see them. They jump up, you let it slide, you give them kisses, you pet them, and you say hello.

In that moment, jumping worked.

It got your dog attention, affection, and interaction.

Now the next day, youโ€™ve had a frustrating day at work. You come home aggravated, and the jumping is overwhelming. This time, you correct the dog. Maybe you ignore them. Maybe you push them away. Maybe you donโ€™t interact with them at all.

Now your dog is living in the

Yesterday, jumping got them something they wanted.

Today, jumping got them the exact opposite.

So what do you think theyโ€™re going to do tomorrow?

Theyโ€™re going to keep trying the behavior that has worked beforeโ€”because at some point, jumping ๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘‘ produce something good, and thereโ€™s a good chance it will again.

This is why inconsistent corrections rarely fix behaviors.

Your dog isnโ€™t being stubborn. Theyโ€™re trying to figure out ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜†.

So what does black-and-white training look like in this situation?

If you donโ€™t want your dog jumping when you come through the door, that is a ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ, ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† you need to set.

Everyone who comes through that door follows the same rule.

Every time.

And if someone cannot follow that rule, then the dog gets put away and brought out later when you have the time and ability to handle the interaction properly.

That isnโ€™t restriction.

Dogs with clear, consistent, black-and-white boundaries are not restricted. They donโ€™t become robots. They arenโ€™t sitting around sad because they have rules.

Instead, they become

They know what to expect.

Life becomes predictable.

They know where the line is drawn, and they donโ€™t have to constantly guess where that line moved today.

And that creates something incredibly important:

Clear boundaries create trust between dog and handler.

Consistency creates understanding.

Understanding creates reliability.

When a command always means the same thing, the dog doesnโ€™t have to wonder what you mean when you say it. They understand the expectation, and that understanding is what allows reliability to develop.

There is no single training approach that works exactly the same way for every dog.

Different dogs have different genetics, experiences, temperaments, drives, fears, motivations, and needs. The way I train one dog may look completely different from the way I train another.

But for ๐‘ฆ๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ dog, the expectations should be clear.

The communication should be consistent.

The boundaries should be predictable.

And the dog should never have to wonder which version of you is going to show up today.

Make this your sign to do something with your dog today and every day after.

Do it when youโ€™re tired.
Do it when youโ€™re busy.
Do it when youโ€™re frustrated.
Do it when youโ€™re happy.
Do it when youโ€™re distracted.
Do it when you donโ€™t feel like it.

Because your dog doesnโ€™t only need you on your best days.

Build the habit of showing up, working together, and communicatingโ€”even when life isnโ€™t perfect.

Thatโ€™s where the relationship and trust is built. If we canโ€™t be reliable for our dog, why would we expect it from them?
