Today’s Trick: Cross Your Paws

Want to teach your dog an adorable pose? Let’s break it down step by step—this is a new one for my dogs too, so we’re learning together!

✨ Step-by-step:
👉 Start with your dog laying down in front of you
👉 Gently place your hand on top of one of their paws
👉 Use a treat to lure their head toward that paw
👉 As soon as they cross one paw over the other—mark and reward!

💡 Progression tips:
➡️ Once they’re getting it, start fading your helping hand (touching → hovering → no contact)
➡️ Then remove your helping hand completely and rely on the lure

🎯 Next for us:
➡️ Start fading the lure
➡️ Add the verbal command
➡️ Switch to just using my finger to guide
➡️ Then make my motions smaller and smaller

🐶 Tip: If your dog isn’t comfortable with you touching their paw at first, start small. Reward any tolerance—hand nearby, pointing, or brief contact. Build up slowly at their pace

Have fun training! 💛

Training highlights from Monday’s Sit, Stay, and Play group!!

03/24/2026

Training is not all about obedience, it’s also about finding what fulfills your dog both mentally and physically!

During our sit, stay, and play days all the dogs enjoy multiple sniff walks, opportunities to run, and lots of play!!

Each dog is different and finds different activities fulfilling and that is a-ok with us! We are here to make their lives more enjoyable so they actually want to work with us!

Trick Tuesday!!!

“Give me a kiss” or if you are in the holiday spirit “kiss me, I’m Irish” ☘️ 😘

1. I start by making sure the dog understands “touch” aka when I present my empty hand, they touch it (I free shape this, I hold out my hand and wait for them to touch it, then mark and reward)
2. I move my hand up closer to my face
3. I then put my hand on my cheek. When the touch is happening every time I put my hand to my cheek I add “give me a kiss” right before they go touch
4. I remove my whole hand and just tap my cheek!

Tips!!
🐾 I’m okay with a little lick, if you’re not, only mark and reward reps that are just a touch.
🐾 You can teach them hold the position by delaying the mark and reward a bit each rep

Today is Trick Tuesday!! We will be doing a continuation of “Sit Pretty”

Sorry it’s been two weeks! I was very focused on trial prep but we still worked on our new trick!! ✨

Where the girls are at now: no help from my arm, only the lure!! Cora needs less of a lure than Circa and I can stand up while luring. For both of them, I’ve been practicing in different directions and surfaces to help them generalize!!

We will keep phasing out the lure more until I can rely just on the cue, “Pretty”

Any suggestions for next week? 🐶
