As everyone knows by now...It's storm season. Help your pets cope
To keep pets safe and calm during storms, bring them indoors immediately, secure all exits, and create a quiet, comfortable "safe space" (like a crate or closet) to manage anxiety. Use white noise or calm music to drown out thunder, and consider using Thundershirts, treats, or anxiety medication for severe fear. Ensure pets have ID tags and microchips, as pets often bolt in panic.
Immediate Safety Measures
**Bring Pets Indoors: Never leave pets outside during severe weather.
**Secure the Home: Lock doors and windows; terrified pets can exhibit great strength to escape.
**Keep on Leash: If a dog needs to go out before a storm, keep them on a leash to prevent bolting.
**ID Check: Ensure pets wear collars with current ID tags, and ensure microchips are registered.
Managing Storm Anxiety (Astraphobia)
**Create a Safe Haven: Allow pets to choose a safe, familiar spot, such as under a bed, in a bathroom, or in a crate.
**Reduce Sensory Input: Close blinds to hide lightning and use white noise machines, fans, or music to drown out thunder.
**Distraction: Use treats, toys, or interactive games to keep their mind off the noise.
**Comfort Them: Stay calm yourself. Gently comforting your pet, or using products like Thundershirts or pheromone diffusers (e.g., Adaptil, Feliway), can help reduce anxiety.
Long-Term and Pre-Storm Planning
**Prepare a Kit: Have a pet emergency kit ready with food, water, and medication.
**Veterinary Advice: For pets with severe phobias, discuss with a veterinarian the use of short-term or long-term anti-anxiety medications.
**Check Surroundings: After a storm, check the yard for downed power lines or debris before allowing pets out

Key Springtime Safety & Care Measures:

*Parasite Prevention: As temperatures rise, fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes become active. Ensure your pet is on year-round, vet-approved heartworm and parasite prevention.

*Toxic Hazards: Many spring flowers (lilies, azaleas, rhododendrons, crocuses, daffodils) are toxic. Keep pets away from fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and cocoa mulch.

*Grooming & Health: Brush pets regularly to remove the winter coat. Schedule a spring checkup to check for allergies, which can cause itching, sneezing, or skin infections in pets.
*
Safety Precautions: Ensure pets have proper identification tags and up-to-date microchip information, as they may wander more in warmer weather.

*Cleaning Safety: Store cleaning products securely. Keep pets away from freshly cleaned areas until they are completely dry.

*Outdoor Activity: Gradually increase exercise as weather warms.

*Avoid letting pets drink from puddles or stagnant water to prevent diseases like Leptospirosis.

THANKSGIVING SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR PET
To ensure pet safety on Thanksgiving, avoid giving them table scraps, bones, or fatty/seasoned foods like gravy, stuffing, and desserts, as they can be toxic or cause digestive issues like pancreatitis. Safe options include small amounts of plain, unseasoned, and boneless turkey meat, sweet potatoes, and green beans, along with providing your pet with their own special treats or a safe, quiet space to retreat from the commotion.

****WHAT TO AVOID
*Bones: Cooked turkey bones can splinter and cause internal injury or blockages.
*Fatty and seasoned foods: Gravy, fatty meat trimmings, and butter-laden dishes can lead to pancreatitis.
*Toxic ingredients: Onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins are toxic to pets.
*Sweets: Desserts often contain chocolate or xylitol, which are dangerous. Be mindful that some sugar-free items contain xylitol.
*Raw dough: It can expand in a pet's stomach and cause bloating or lead to alcohol poisoning.
*Trash: Keep the turkey carcass and all food waste in a secure trash can that pets cannot access.

****What to offer
*Plain cooked turkey: A small amount of skinless, boneless, white meat is a good source of protein.
*Plain sweet potatoes: Baked or boiled, without butter or sugar.
*Steamed green beans: Plain and unseasoned.
**Pumpkin: Plain canned pumpkin (not pie filling) or roasted pumpkin flesh is a good option.
Other pet-safe treats: Offer your pet their regular food or a special toy or store-bought, pet-specific treat to make them feel included

****How to include pets safely
*Create a safe space: Set up a quiet, comfortable spot where your pet can go if the festivities become overwhelming.
*Maintain routine: Stick to their regular feeding and walking schedules as much as possible.
*Supervise interactions: Remind guests, especially children, to interact gently with your pet.
**Monitor doorways: Be vigilant to prevent pets from escaping when guests are coming and going.
*Inform guests: Politely ask guests not to feed your pet human food to avoid any accidental exposure to unsafe ingredients.

FALL PET SAFETY
To ensure fall safety for pets, protect paws and joints with booties and sweaters, be aware of toxic decorations, plants, and mushrooms, and keep seasonal treats and candy away from your pet. Additionally, maintain leash use and visibility on walks with reflective gear, and watch for wildlife and pests like fleas and ticks. Keep an eye on your pet's weight, provide a warm, comfortable sleeping area, and be mindful of your pet's comfort if they are wearing a costume
**Outdoor hazards
Plants and mushrooms: Remove or keep pets away from potentially toxic fall plants, such as wild mushrooms, acorns, and certain flowering plants like chrysanthemums.
**Toxic treats:
Keep sugary holiday treats, chocolate, and candy out of reach, as they can be toxic to pets.
Wildlife:
**Be vigilant for agitated snakes preparing for hibernation and bears(if heading North) looking for food as they get ready for winter.
**Pests:
Ticks and fleas are still active in the fall, so check your pet thoroughly after outdoor adventures.
**Visibility:
Use reflective gear, such as leashes, collars, and your own clothing, to improve visibility during early morning or evening walks.
****Indoor and home hazards
**Decorations: Store fall decorations, including candles, jack-o'-lanterns, and other potentially hazardous items, out of your pet's reach.
**Costumes: If you dress your pet in a costume, ensure it doesn't restrict their movement, breathing, or senses, and that it's made with safe, non-toxic materials.
**Heating devices: Turn off electric heaters when you leave the house to prevent accidents or house fires.
***Health and comfort
**Temperature: Bring pets inside earlier in the evening and provide a warm, comfortable place to sleep.
**Warm clothing: Consider a jacket or sweater for your pet, especially for short-haired or senior pets who may feel the cold more acutely.
**Weight and hydration: Monitor your pet's weight, as decreased activity combined with seasonal treats can lead to unwanted weight gain.
**Allergies: Just like humans, pets can develop seasonal allergies in the fall.
***Other important safety tips
**ID tags and microchips: Ensure your pet is microchipped and wears an ID tag.
**Keep paths clear: Make sure pathways are clear of pet toys and supplies to prevent people from tripping.
