Never count your chicks before they hatch.

And never trust a broody. This girl was on day 16ish, and just decided to abandon ship. One full day later still MIA. The eggs were moving upon candling(heat wave was good for something) and only a few days from hatch. Decided to give them a fair chance, and moved the 8 eggs to the main coop where multiple girls took turns doing sitting duty including our 9 year old hen Ms. Gray bless her.
Checked yesterday and all the eggs had vanished without a trace. I believe the ravens struck again, bold bu**ers have no fear of going in the coop last few years. Only eggs we get anymore are what is laid before the coop opens for the day.

Letting hens brood eggs can be fun, but nature is so cruel. Only time we've had success is when we can get a hen to brood in a safe secure area away from the other hens and egg hungry critters, which this was but if the hen calls it quits also there's not much you can do.
You were so close poor girl.

Don't give up on your dreams. Keep holding tight. You might be closer to reaching it than you ever imagined. ❤️

Had hubby smoke a chicken pre-heatwave so we could have cold chicken salad sammies today. The chicken wasn't done at all.
We both failed to check inside upon bringing it in, even though the outside looked perfect. So just the cheesy potato crisps for dinner it is and chocolate goat milk. Burying that hatchet and moving on. We'll cook it later tonight and try again another day. Summers are for spontaneity in our diet anyway right?

Crisps tasted good, and at least the brakes got done right that day, among fire calls and who knows what else that poor guy did. He's been doing so much overtime this year. Anyone else hoping that bill gets passed. 🙏
