MAXINE LOST EVERYTHING BEFORE SHE EVER GOT HER CHANCE TO START OVER.

Maxine was one of the dogs we rescued from the Ellis County hoarding case earlier this year.

She was only two years old when she gave birth for the first time.

The day before our team arrived, Maxine delivered eight puppies while trapped in horrific conditions, conditions no mother should ever have been forced to endure.

By the time we reached her, all eight puppies had passed away.

Maxine came into our emergency shelter carrying the weight of everything she had just experienced. She had lost her entire litter, been taken from the only environment she knew, and suddenly found herself surrounded by unfamiliar people, dogs, sounds, and smells.

At first, she was overwhelmed.

So we gave her what she needed most: time.

Time to decompress.
Time to feel safe.
Time to learn that she no longer had to spend every moment simply trying to survive.

Slowly, Maxine began to come back to herself.

Today, she is intelligent, loyal, affectionate, and resilient. The kind of German Shepherd anyone would be lucky to know.

Of all the dogs rescued from that hoarding case, Maxine is the last one still waiting for her second chance.

Her story is marked by unimaginable loss, but it is also a story of strength.

Some people understand that certain grief never completely disappears. You learn to carry it. You learn to keep moving forward. You learn that surviving does not mean forgetting.

Maxine kept going.

What happened to her will always be part of her story, but it does not have to determine the rest of her life.

Her eight puppies never got their second chance. Maxine still can.

She has survived enough.

Now she deserves a home where she can finally stop surviving and simply live.

Ajax is one of those dogs who makes you stop and smile.

He is a big, beautiful Great Pyrenees with a gentle personality, an easy smile, and the kind of sweet nature that makes his size feel almost comical. At only one year old, Ajax is still very much a young dog figuring out the world.

Unfortunately, his world changed quickly.

Ajax was surrendered after his owner could no longer care for him. He is now staying in a small shelter that is completely full, and the constant barking and chaos around him can be overwhelming.

He isn’t causing problems. He isn’t acting out.

He is simply stressed by an environment that is difficult for a quiet, gentle dog.

Once Ajax gets outside, you can see the difference immediately. He relaxes, enjoys the grass, and happily leans his entire oversized body against you for affection like personal space was never invented.

Right now, Ajax needs a quieter place where he can decompress and feel safe again.

Ajax has his entire life ahead of him.

He just needs someone to give him the chance to start it again.

Some dogs walk into the shelter and immediately act like they know they’re handsome.

Yams is one of those dogs.

This 1-year-old Husky has the blue eyes, the big smile, the fluffy coat, and absolutely no shortage of personality. He looks like he should be starring in an expensive dog food commercial, yet somehow his name is Yams.

And we’re keeping it.

He’s young, happy, goofy, and still at that perfect age where his future is wide open. Yams is ready for someone to make him part of the family, take him on adventures, spoil him appropriately, and provide the important things in life like attention, snacks, and a comfortable place to dramatically shed his entire coat twice a year.

The best part?

Imagine someone asking what kind of dog you have.

“A Husky.”

“What’s his name?”

“Yams.”

Conversation over. You win.

This sweet female 3yr old Belgian Malinois was picked up today and is in desperate need of a lifeline. She is in pain, suffering from flea allergic mange, and has a large, open wound across her lower back above her tail.

Due to her injuries, our facility cannot provide the long-term medical care she needs. She has a strict 24-hour deadline for owner redemption or an approved 501(c)(3) rescue tag.

This is Tigger. He’s 2 years old, and today was supposed to be his last day on Earth.

Initially thought to have been hit by a car, X-rays revealed Tigger actually has a congenital spinal deformity called thoracic lordosis, giving him a unique, wobbly bunny hop. Combined with a heartworm-positive diagnosis, he was passed by for months in a crowded shelter until he was placed on the euthanasia list.

Ferris Animal Shelter pulled him from danger just in time! He’s safe and starting his heartworm treatment, but he needs a real home. Tigger has no idea he's different, he just wants to love and be loved.

In the quiet moments at the shelter, when the barking dies down, 2-year-old Maxine tilts her head and stares out through the chain-link fence. If you ask her, her eyes give you the answer: She dreams of a home. She dreams of a family.

But right now, time is a luxury Maxine simply doesn't have.

A Bittersweet Goodbye in the Making
Maxine sits in her kennel alongside her two brothers, Thunder and Lightning. They lean on each other for comfort in a loud, terrifying world. But there is a heartbreaking, silent divide in that cage.

Lightning is safe. He received a life-saving rescue tag, and while he is still at the shelter until mid-July, his future is guaranteed. He has a ticket out.

But Maxine and Thunder? They don't have tags. They don't have a guarantee of tomorrow. They are sitting next to their brother, completely unaware that while his life is secure, theirs are hanging by a thread.

Because the shelter is completely over capacity, Maxine and Thunder might not even make it to mid-July to see their brother leave.

Ferris Animal Shelter is over capacity. Maxine is a beautiful, gentle 2-year-old spayed female who deserves a lifetime of love, but her clock is ticking down to zero.
