🦠🚜 Biosecurity: Not the Most Glamorous Topic… But One of the Most Important! 🐴🐮🐐
Let’s be honest — biosecurity doesn’t sound nearly as exciting as foaling season or show wins. But when it comes to protecting your animals, it’s a superstar behind the scenes.

What is biosecurity?
Simply put: it’s everything we do to prevent the spread of disease on and off your farm.
And yes, it matters more than you think.

New animal coming home?
Quarantine for 2–3 weeks before introducing them to the herd.

Sharing water buckets, nose-to-nose contact at shows, or communal fences?
Easy ways for respiratory diseases (like Flu/Rhino) to spread.

Boots, hands, and equipment?
We can accidentally carry bacteria and viruses from farm to farm. (That’s why you’ll see us cleaning and disinfecting between calls!)

One sick animal?
Early isolation can prevent a barn-wide outbreak.

💡 Simple biosecurity wins:
✔ Isolate new arrivals
✔ Don’t share tack or equipment between farms
✔ Clean and disinfect trailers after hauling
✔ Wash hands between handling groups
✔ Stay current on vaccinations

Disease outbreaks are stressful, expensive, and sometimes devastating — but many are preventable with a solid biosecurity plan.
Healthy herds don’t happen by accident. They happen by intention.

Patient spotlight: Sweetpea!

Sweetpea was seen by Dr. Archuleta for her routine wellness exam, and she was the perfect little patient. While miniature horses may be tiny compared to their full-sized friends, they still need regular veterinary care to stay happy and healthy.

Preventive exams are an important part of keeping horses of all sizes thriving, and Sweetpea is a great reminder that good things really do come in small packages. ❤️

- Clean water access
- Shade
- Ventilation
- Reduced handling during peak heat.

Happy Vet Assistant Week! 🩺🐴

Figured this week was the perfect excuse for a little introduction since I’m usually the one behind the camera or hanging onto the lead rope somewhere.

Hi! I’m Sierra. I grew up in Quincy, California, and got into horses when I was really young.. and yeah, I never grew out of the horse girl phase. Growing up I stayed busy with 4-H, band, cheerleading, and had the opportunity to be our local rodeo queen.

After college, I moved to Reno and started working in veterinary medicine. I’ve been in the field for about seven years now, mostly in small animal medicine, but I’m really happy to be back working with large animals again.

I married my husband in September 2025, and we live in Fallon with our little crew — two horses, a mini, chickens, and four dogs that definitely keep life entertaining. Outside of work, you can usually find me on a horse or somewhere with the dogs.

I’m really thankful to be part of this field and lucky to work with such amazing clients, patients, and coworkers every day. 💙

Quick health check!

A healthy horse should generally have:

- Bright eyes
- Good appetite
- Normal manure production
- Consistent water intake
- Comfortable movement

Small changes can be early warning sings of bigger problems. Don’t hesitate to call if something seems “off”
