I dug up this article as I'm in process of helping my mentor with writing a book, currently drafting a section on the neck. I think the information here on the C1 and C2 vertebrae is important to understanding the limits of lateral flexion for the neck. Particularly, if there is too much flexion, the flexion at C2 causes the horse's head to tilt. This interferes with the balance of the horse and, if left unchecked, can lead to arthritis and lesions in the neck. Overflexing is typically the result of overuse of one rein.
