The Groove Bill Toucanet (Aulachorynchus sulcatus) is a small green toucanet from the higher elevations of Venezuela and northeastern Colombia, ranging from 1,000 feet to 6,000 feet in the tropical forests. It has only been recently available in aviculture, since it first arrived in 2023.
The Groove Bill has become a very prolific breeder in captivity(Emerald Forest Bird Gardens had the first captive breeding of this species) in the very short period since it first arrived in the U.S. It's proclivity to breed has made it readily available. It is easily housed as a pet. It is a quiet, attractive bird(see photo) similar to the Emerald toucanet, to which it is closely related. Handfed Groove Bill babies,of which we have several available, like people and make good pet quality companions. It is now the most affordable of all the various toucan species.
