Why Dogs Have Floppy Ears: An Animated Tale

Why do dogs look different from wolves? The question bedeviled Charles Darwin. Now scientists have a fascinating theory that links droopy ears and splotchy coats with domestication.

One of the best ways to gets you dogs attention on walks with lots of distractions, is to run with your dog calling their name so you are lots more interesting than the distraction. Remember to always praise the attention they give you.

If You need help with techniques and scheduling, let me know. 40$ in home session.

Here are the three most important things to remember about dog training:

1) Reinforce the behaviors you want to see by using the dogs natural abilities at first.

2) Discourage or prevent the behaviors you don't want to see with consistent efforts.

3) YOU ARE BOTH LEARNING AND ITS OK TO MAKE MISTAKES.

READ MORE BELOW........

When you do the training

Do all training in small steps, starting with the easiest approximation of the desired behavior
As your dog learns the easy steps, increase the difficulty very slowly.
When your dog demonstrates the current step, praise and reinforce the dog promptly. A tiny, easy to eat treat that the dog doesn't have to chew is best. Smaller than the tip of your little finger.
Your goal is to get the dog to do the behavior on their own. At early stages, you can lure the dog with a small piece of food. As the training progresses, you should remove the food from your hand.
You can do your training in sets of five repetitions and only make things harder after your dog succeeds 4 or 5 times out of 5 trials. If your dog only gets it right 3 times, try another set of 50the same thing. If your dog gets less than 3 right, make things easier.
Your success measure is called criteria. Criteria may have multiple aspects, such as speed, degree of behavior (full sit, partial sit, etc), level of prompting or luring, locations, etc. When you change criteria to make things harder or easier, change only one criteria at a time. I.e., don't simultaneously expect the dog to sit and outside on a busy street when you say “sit” if your dog isn't able to sit indoors when you lead his nose upwards with a hotdog in your hand. Baby steps!
Every behavior can be broken down into smaller partial behaviors
Take a break of at least an hour after training for five or ten minutes.
You should make sure the dog receive reinforcement 3–5 times a minute. This is called - rate of reinforcement.. It's probably the most important metric in training. If your rate is too slow, the dog will walk off or seem bored.
The key to success is to keep your rate night and make sure your dog succeeds at each step before pushing on to the next step
If your dog fails at a training step, it's your job to make the training easier. It's not the dog’s fault.
To be a real training nerd, plan your sessions and keep records.

HALF OFF IN-HOME EVALUATION!!!!!!
Before you peruse the local want ads or Facebook marketplace, let me suggest another idea.

There are hundreds of dogs and cats and hamsters and rabbits and pigs and goats every year that are abandoned or removed from an unfit home.

Pawsitive Fundamentals wants to support building new relationships with the pups you adopt. No matter what age they are, puppy to elder.

If you recently adopted any aged dog from a rescue, shelter, or SPCA I will do a $25 in home evaluation.

Included is a behaviors evaluation, a response evaluation, a handling evaluation, and learning ability evaluation. Also included is a workable plan to help unwanted behaviors and a short lesson in attention training, which is yours to keep. Normally this would cost $50-80 with other trainers. If you choose to continue lessons with me, other discounts will apply.

So text me or message me today!!

The best way to respect your dogs boundries is to respect others. Be aware of their body language.
Stress can look like a lot like not listening or bad behavior...
Top Ten Indicators of Stress in Dogs

Pacing or shaking. You’ve seen your dog shake after a bath or a roll in the grass. That whole body shake can be amusing and is quite normal…unless it’s a result of a stressful situation. For example, dogs are commonly stressed out when visiting the veterinarian, much like their owners are when going to a human medical doctor. Many dogs “shake it off” when they descend from the exam table and touch down on terra firma. Dogs, like people, also pace when agitated. Some dogs walk a repeated path around the exam room while waiting for the doctor.

Whining or barking. Vocalization is normal canine self-expression, but may be intensified under duress. Dogs that are afraid or tense may whine or bark to get your attention, or to self soothe.
Yawning, drooling and licking. Dogs yawn when they are tired or bored, but did you know that they also yawn when stressed? A stressful yawn is more prolonged and intense than a sleepy yawn. Dogs may also drool and lick excessively when nervous.
Changes in eyes and ears. Stressed dogs, like stressed people, may have dilated pupils and blink rapidly. They may open their eyes really wide and show more sclera (white) than usual, giving them a startled appearance. Ears that are usually relaxed or alert are pinned back against the head.
Changes in body posture. Dogs normally bear even weight on all four legs. If a healthy dog with no orthopedic problems shifts his weight to his rear legs or cowers, he may be exhibiting stress. When scared, dogs may also tuck their tails or become quite rigid.

Shedding. Show dogs that become nervous in the show ring often “blow their coat”. Dogs also shed a lot when in the veterinary clinic. Although less noticeable in outside settings, such as visiting a new dog park, shedding increases when a dog is anxious.
Panting. Dogs pant when hot, excited or stressed. So, if your dog is panting even though she hasn’t jogged 10 miles in the heat of summer, she may be frazzled.

Changes in bodily functions. Like people, nervous dogs can feel a sudden urge to go to the bathroom. When your dog urinates shortly after meeting a new canine friend, he may be marking territory and reacting to the strain simultaneously. Refusal of food and loss of bowel function are also stress indicators.

Avoidance or displacement behavior. When faced with an unwelcome situation, dogs may “escape” by focusing on something else. They may sniff the ground, lick their ge****ls, or simply turn away. Ignoring someone may not be polite, but it’s surely better than being aggressive. If your dog avoids interaction with other dogs or people, don’t force the issue. Respect his choice.

Hiding or Escape behavior. An extension of avoidance, some tense dogs literally move behind their owners to hide. They may even nudge their owners to prompt them to move along. As a means of escape, they may engage in diversion activities such as digging or circling, or may slink behind a tree or parked car.

"What went wrong?" You can see it in the wide eyed stare that people get when they see their furry loved one not following a command that moments before it had seemed they had mastered.

The short answer is nothing. A missed command teaches both of you a valuable lesson. You learned what didn't work. If you try again and succeed, you can compare why it is different. Your pet is learning too! They are learning to understand what cues mean a command. That includes verbal or physical cues.

I have a saying that I offer to all my clients. Practice to be better, not perfect. Perfection can set too high expectations for a relationship that is just starting. Being better however means you have to just try. With effort, you can soon see a deepening understanding of those subtle cues that every person gives between loved furry friend and themselves.

And in this regard I also tailor each training program to the client. I help people learn to communicate through learning each others quirks and body language. By having one on one sessions you get the full dedication of a person teaching you both a new language.

Had an emergency night call for a quick one time session for introducing two soon to be roommate dogs. They were scared of aggression and it just not being able to work.
It can be hard for a non socialized dog to allow another dog into their space. It can be even more scary if you don't know where to start.

Both dogs were great though and I was able to get them started off the right way.

If you have concerns about socializing your dog, I can offer a one time one on one session for only 40$.

I can talk with you about your concerns and offer helpful tips for introducing your dog to others or bringing a new pet into an established home. I can walk you through introductions in a controlled supervised way, and make sure you have a gameplan going forward.

It's so important to start off any relationship with a positive mindframe and I can help you get there.

Christmas is right around the corner. and with the sparkle of twinkling lights and flashes of shiny wrapping paper can distract you from the realities of what a new puppy for christmas can mean.
“IT’S NOT TRAINED,” “It smells,” “It’s too much work,” “It won’t stop barking,” “I didn’t want it, the kids did,” are just some of the monay things I hear from pet parents with regret tinging their voices.

But this doesnt have to be you. By finding a trainer early you can quickly build a forever relationship with your new family member.

Because of my commitment to building a solid foundation with positive fundamentals, you can turn a confused puppy into a loving forever family member.

Message me today to schedule your evaluation.
