Busch Gardens has been getting away with gross violations of elephant and animal welfare for years. We are grateful for the investigation spearheaded by the Weeping Elephant Project (WEP) to expose the disturbing situation at this notorious zoo, which is really just an entertainment facility. We join the Weeping Elephant Project in calling for accountability and transparency with the goal of ending elephant suffering. The 2026 investigation has produced voluminous reports from former keepers about the zoo's failures to protect its elephants from harm, including fireworks and the thunderous noise of roller coasters. Formal complaints filed with the USDA and AZA in October 2024 have still not resulted in any action against the zoo.

As former keepers related to WEP, Asian elephants Tina, Simba, Karnaudi, and Karnaudi are subjected to the deafening noise of a giant roller coaster located immediately adjacent to their enclosure. During the July 4 fireworks, they were seen huddling together in fear. Adding insult to injury, the elephants must also endure assaults to their sensitive hearing from construction projects, ride machinery crowds, and the continual din heard in the zoo. The space for the elephants is vastly inadequate. The most disturbing part is that the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), which accredits this zoo, apparently sanctions these deplorable conditions. It's past time for this cruelty to be brought to light.

African elephants Alice, Ginny, and Kate are scheduled to move to their new sanctuary home in Tennessee by late 2027. We are delighted that these three elephants, dubbed “the golden girls,” will be given a golden retirement in a warm, vast, and lush pastoral sanctuary setting.

Seven chimpanzees are confined at the roadside zoo in Michigan.
The Nonhuman Rights Project is calling for them to be transferred to an accredited sanctuary, where they could live in an environment suited to their complex social, physical, and psychological needs.

Chimpanzees are intelligent, self-aware beings. They form deep relationships, plan for the future, experience empathy, and grieve for those they have lost.

They have a vital interest in freedom, to the greatest extent possible compatible with their safety and that of others.

The NhRP is greatly encouraged by the news that the Bronx Zoo is considering moving Patty, the last elephant at the zoo (following the death of Happy in May), to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee (TES). The Bronx Zoo is considering this move because, according to its Interim Director Craig Piper, “We want to make sure that we do the best thing for Patty.” As we have long advocated, the best thing for Patty would be to send her to an accredited elephant sanctuary, which is the only place where the complex physical and psychological needs of elephants can be met, short of the wild. At TES, Patty would be able to exercise her autonomy to the greatest extent possible, after a lifetime of having been denied a normal elephant life.

“The Bronx Zoo has the opportunity to allow Patty to live in an environment that is designed to meet her fundamental needs, and we are encouraged by the Zoo’s willingness to consider relocating her to an accredited elephant sanctuary. Patty deserves to live the rest of her life with dignity. We are hopeful the zoo will do what is right,” said Elizabeth Stein, NhRP’s Litigation Director.

Today, Roger Williams Park Zoo announces that after an extensive evaluation process, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has been selected as the future home for our beloved African elephants Alice, Ginny, and Kate. They are set to move at the end of 2027.
