Sniff Club got a little spooky this morning! 🎃🐾 We met at Northern Lights Farm for a special Halloween walk around the pumpkin patch—full of fall sniffs and good company!

Who needs treats when you’ve got this many sniffs? 👻🍂 (Just kidding. We brought treats, too. 😉)

🎃 Comfort before costumes! 🐾

Halloween is almost here! If your dog hasn’t had time to practice wearing a costume and build positive associations with it, keep things simple this year.

Choose something similar to what they already comfortably wear:
👻 A festive bandanna for a dog who’s used to wearing one.
🦇 A lightweight costume that fits like their familiar harness, without bulky extras or dangling pieces.
✂️ A creative groom for a dog who already enjoys grooming. Any color should be dog-safe and applied by a knowledgeable groomer—this isn’t a last-minute option for a dog who finds grooming stressful.

Even a simple accessory can feel unfamiliar. Let your dog investigate, reward comfortable participation, and keep it brief. Costumes should allow them to move, see, hear, and breathe freely.

Watch for freezing, moving away, tucked posture, repeated lip licking, or attempts to remove the outfit. Being still for a photo doesn’t always mean being comfortable!

Full costumes take gradual practice, and there’s no need to rush that process for Halloween. A festive backdrop—or your dog’s everyday birthday suit—can make an adorable photo, too. 🧡

The best costume is one your dog feels comfortable wearing!

Trick or Greet! 🎃 What if your dog needs a trick rather than a greet? 👋🐾

If your dog gets a little too excited to say hello up close, a wave from a comfortable distance can be a fun alternative!

Practice at home first, then try it with enough space for your dog to stay relaxed and focused.

🎃 Is your dog on the Halloween welcoming committee… or would they prefer the night off?

Even dogs who LOVE visitors can find a whole evening of trick-or-treaters a little too exciting!

Make a plan that fits your pup:
🍬 Hand out candy outside to reduce doorbell ringing.
🏡 Set up a cozy retreat with background noise and a favorite enrichment activity.
👋 For dogs comfortable watching from a distance, try a wave instead of an up-close greeting!

Taking breaks—or skipping greetings entirely—is always an option. 🧡

🐾 Your dog knows how to sit… so why won’t they do it when you ask?

Maybe they sit beautifully in your living room, but at the park? Forget it!

Here’s the thing: knowing a behavior and being able to perform it in different situations are two very different skills.

Dogs don’t automatically understand that “sit” in the kitchen means the same thing as “sit” when there’s another dog nearby, an interesting smell on the ground, or a whole world of exciting things happening around them.

That’s where thoughtful, progressive training comes in!

Turn Trick or Treat into… Trick or Greet! 🎃🐾

Halloween can be a LOT for our dogs. Doorbells ringing, costumes, excited kids, strangers approaching the house—and somehow everyone keeps yelling TRICK OR TREAT! 👻

So this October, we’re turning Trick or Treat into Trick or Greet!

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing simple skills to help your dog practice calmer, more comfortable greetings. We’ll work on things like:

🐾 Staying settled when exciting things are happening
🚪 What to do when someone comes to the door
👋 Polite greetings without jumping
🎃 Helping dogs feel more comfortable around costumes and unusual sights
🍬 And using a fun trick as an alternative way to say hello!

Plus, we’re practicing at Training Spot all month long! Stop by with your dog, show us a trick, and your pup will get their very own little treat bag. 🥰

All October long, bring your dog by Training Spot, show us one of their tricks, and they’ll go home with their very own little bag of treats! Any trick counts — sit, shake, spin, wave, or whatever your pup wants to show off. 🐕✨

🏠 Halloween Prep
Doorbells, costumes, decorations, strangers at the door… Halloween can be a LOT for our dogs. We’ll be sharing tips throughout the month to help make October a little less spooky.

👋 Trick or Greet
We’re turning trick-or-treat into Trick or Greet! Follow along as we talk about managing Halloween greetings and teach a festive alternative to jumping, barking, or rushing the door — including how to teach your dog to wave hello!
