I don't know why I never did this before! I'm making a catalog of all my carved blocks. First up- the small ones that I can print with an ink pad. I'll get to some ink printing really soon! And then I'll be able to go back and see what I have instead of digging through boxes!

This week in the garden...we're looking at what's almost ripe & what I'm super impatient for!
1 These gorgeous tomatoes that are so dark purple that they're almost black
2 These purple tomatoes that turn a little red on the bottom when they're ripe
3 My elderberries - sambucus canadensis
4 The grapes are loaded this year!
5 So is the Asian pear tree
6 And the figs! My favorite!
7 And bonus photo of a bumble bee diving head first into a cardoon flower

Tell me what you're waiting for!

Amazing! What a good pup!

Maple is part of the team at MSU’s Pollinator Performance Center doing critical pollinator research and education. A retired police K-9, she uses her super sense of smell to detect bacteria in bee colonies to help prevent disease from spreading.

Currently, beekeepers must manually inspect colonies for disease, but dogs like Maple can identify disease much faster, which could make a big impact on the industry.

This project is one of many occurring at the Pollinator Performance Center. Operating since 2021, the center allows MSU to be at the forefront of honeybee and other pollinator research.

This week on the homestead.... it's all about the flowers! I'm loving all the color and the pollinators buzzing all over the place....
1. The cardoons are really attracting the giant bumblebees!
2. My one and only bachelor button... one of my favorite flowers
3. I think these are called four o'clocks. I didn’t think they'd come back this year, but here they are!
4. The chaos bed has all sorts of gorgeous flowers
5. The goldenrod is here! I love this bright flower!

As we start getting into canning season here, I like to take a pragmatic look at what's worth preserving, and what doesn't work for my family. Here are the results!

Y'all. I posted this recipe a few days ago and then forgot to share it. This right here is what summer is all about. Ok, really it's dessert for EVERY season. Tonight we had rhubarb from the garden, mixed with last year's foraged blackberries. O.M.G. it is so delish. Make this recipe for a (mostly) healthy dessert all year round!

As promised, here is that gorgeous red St. John's Wort tincture. This is how you know the herb is especially potent. There are also milky oat tops in with the St. John's Wort. The left jar is infused oil, which is also quite red, its just hard to see.

Look at this amazing amount of St. John's Wort that I foraged on my morning walk. This is currently becoming a tincture along with some milky oat tops. It's great for Seasonal Affected Depression. I also have some infusing in oil to make a lovely salve for bumps and bruises.
One thing that's fun about St. John's Wort is that it turns the menstruum (oil or alcohol in this case) the most beautiful purpley red color! I'll show pics of that tomorrow.
What are you foraging right now?
