A low-income veterinary clinic in Pleasant Hill says it plans to shut down this month unless it can find additional funding.
The Community Veterinary Center provides pet care, including surgery and dental treatments, on a sliding pay scale based on income.

The nonprofit was formerly located on the St. Vincent de Paul campus in west Eugene, before moving to Pleasant Hill last year.
Now, Lynda Erickson, a member of its Board of Directors, said it may have to shut down at the end of this month. She said it can no longer afford to offer appointments past June 13. She said the nonprofit lost several major donors after it relocated from Eugene to Pleasant Hill, and lacks a dedicated fundraiser to help replace them.

If the clinic closes, Erickson said it would hurt the approximately 200 clients that it sees each month. She said many of them are referred to the center by other veterinarians who they couldn’t afford. "Some of them walk out of the door just paying partial payments," said Erickson. “These are pets and people who are not going to get services in the future." Erickson said the center needs to raise an additional $20,000 per month to stay open, and is searching for corporate donors or a foundation for support. She's also asking community members to donate. "We have to keep having hope until the day we are done," said Erickson. "Part of that is just getting the word out there."

The Community Veterinary Center is a non-profit veterinary practice that has served Lane County's low-income community for over 12 years. We use a sliding scale fee structure, but we may have to close by the end of June unless we raise essential funds.

Donations will cover our services and support other veterinary professionals. For example, if 100 people donate $5 (the cost of a morning coffee), we could raise $500. If 100 people donate $15 (the cost of an average take-out dinner), we could raise $1,500. These funds will help provide urgent care for pets in need.

To donate, please visit https://www.communityvet.org/giving-page to make a donation. All contributions will go directly to helping animals in need. Thank you for your support!

Since 2011, the Community Veterinary Center has been providing high-quality, comprehensive medical care for animals, regardless of their owners' income. We offer our services at discounted rates based on income. If we were to close our doors, it would have a significant impact on our low-income clients. Without your help, we will be forced to close our doors on June 15, 2025.

Donations can be made at our location, 84920 Ridgeway Rd, Pleasant Hill, OR 97455, or through our website: https://www.communityvet.org/

Together, I know we can save the clinic.

A heartwarming story by Jim Baker illustrating how one act of kindness can make a difference.

One day, a very friendly gold cat decided that our backyard was the perfect place to have her babies. Concerned for their safety, we brought them inside. The mama cat gave birth to three adorable kittens. Not long after, my granddaughter found an abandoned kitten and asked if we could help. We introduced the tiny kitten to the mama cat, who welcomed her with gentle licks and made her part of the family. We named the new kitten Tina because she was so tiny.

When the kittens were old enough to find new homes, the mama cat found a wonderful lady with a big house and an even bigger heart. Two of the kittens, Otter and Lisa, went to live with my son's fiancée. That left Simon and Tina. My grandson insisted that we keep those two.

Tina and Simon became best friends. Tina has a quirky habit of standing on her hind legs and playfully punching at Simon like a little boxer. It's the funniest thing to watch. Tina also acts as a supervisor whenever we are doing something around the house, whether it's fixing or cleaning. She's the most social cat I've ever had. Tina decided that the outdoors weren't for her, so when her brother goes outside, she finds something else to do until he gets back. Then, they chase each other around the house, filling our home with joy and laughter.
