October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Mammary tumors are among the most common of lumps seen by a veterinarian, especially in dogs and cats that are not spayed. One of the best ways to lower your pet's risk of getting mammary cancer is to have them spayed between 6 months and 1-2 years of age. https://www.acvs.org/small-animal/mammary-tumors/

It is Deaf Pet Awareness Week! Congenital deafness in dogs typically stems from a pigmentation gene or the part of the dog's DNA that affects their coat color. The most common coat pattern that is associated with deafness is the merle gene. This coloration is seen in collies, dachshunds, shetland sheepdogs, great danes, foxhounds, old english sheepdogs, and bulldogs. The piebald gene is the second most common cause. Affecting breeds like bull terriers, beagles, bulldogs, dalmations, and the Irish setter. https://neurology.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/resources-owners-deaf-dogs-cats
