This is the final week of Salem’s Board & Train program, and she’s wrapping up her training with environmental exposure work. To put her skills to the test, Salem trained in the Jackson Square, a busy, high-distraction environment filled with noise, movement, and new experiences. Despite the challenges around her, she remained focused on her handler, listened attentively, and confidently completed every task that was asked of her. She did a fantastic job!

This past week, Salem has been working consistently on proofing calm behavior, duration settling, and neutrality training. Proofing calm behavior involves gradually increasing distractions and environmental challenges so that calm, appropriate responses become reliable in a variety of settings. Duration settling focuses on teaching Salem to remain relaxed and settled for extended periods of time, even as activity continues around her. Neutrality training is designed to help Salem remain emotionally neutral around other dogs and environmental stimuli. The goal is for her to calmly observe her surroundings without lunging, barking or becoming overstimulated.

Sweet Salem is currently with us for a 4-week Board & Train Program, and today she got a very special visit from her momma. As excited as Salem was to run over and greet her, she resisted the urge and remembered everything she’s been learning. She spent some time showing off her skills and all the progress she’s made over the last week and a half. We are incredibly proud of Salem and everything she has accomplished so far, but we think her momma might be even prouder.

Moments like these are exactly why we love what we do. There’s nothing quite like seeing a dog’s excitement when they reunite with their owner after time apart. But just as rewarding is seeing a client’s face light up when they see their dog relaxed, happy, confident, and eager to learn. Seeing the pride, excitement, and even relief on a client’s face as they watch their dog succeed reminds us why we are so passionate about training. Building stronger communication, trust, and confidence between dogs and their owners is an incredible experience to witness, and moments like these never get old for us.

Dogs are amazing companions who want nothing more than to make us proud.

Be sure to continue following Salem and her journey. She’s already doing remarkable things, and we know she’s going to be extraordinary by the end of her program.

Huge congratulations to Coco on graduating from our Board & Train program!

This sweet and spunky girl came ready to learn and absolutely crushed it. Coco made incredible progress with her foundation work, loose leash walking, off-leash heeling, and recall. Watching her confidence grow each day has been such a rewarding experience.

Coco brought so much personality and joy to every session. We’re going to miss her happy energy and playful charm, but we know she’s going to be so excited to head home and show off everything she’s learned.

We are so proud of you, Coco! 🐾

Salem has been training with us for just over a week, and she has been doing a phenomenal job. She has been making great progress with loose leash and off-leash walking, heeling, recall, and impulse control.

Salem is eager and highly motivated to train, which has been a tremendous asset to her development. That motivation encourages attention, enthusiasm, and repetition, all of which support learning and strengthen her focus on the handler. It also creates excellent opportunities for impulse control work as she is learning that calm, controlled behavior earns access to rewards such as treats, praise and other positive reinforcement. Keep up the great work Salem!

We are incredibly proud of Coco and the progress she has made in such a short period of time. She has done an excellent job with both loose leash and off-leash walking, and she has picked up recall training with an ease. Coco understands her commands and responds appropriately to body language. She is doing an outstanding job.

At Unity K9, every dog in our care receives more than just activity. They receive structure, balance, and individualized care designed to support their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Whether your dog is here for a Board & Train, Boarding, Daycare, or another program, each day is thoughtfully structured to include:

•Structured play and exercise
•Walks and enrichment activities
•Safe socialization when appropriate
•Individualized attention and care
•Scheduled rest and decompression time

For our Board & Train dogs, structured playtime and rest is an essential part of the learning process. Multiple training sessions throughout the day require focus, energy, and mental engagement. Scheduled downtime allows dogs to decompress, process what they’ve learned, and return to training calm, refreshed, and ready to succeed.

The same balance is equally important for our Boarding and Daycare dogs. After a full day of activity, enrichment, and interaction, dogs need time to recover both mentally and physically. Proper rest helps dogs regulate, settle, and maintain overall behavioral wellness.

We believe lasting progress comes from the balance of training, exercise, structure, and recovery. Our goal is to provide an environment where every dog can thrive while away from home, returning happier, healthier, and more confident.

Meet Salem, a sweet and energetic pup joining us for our 4-week Board & Train program. During her stay, we will focus on building a strong foundation in obedience, house manners, engagement, environmental exposure, and addressing her reactivity to help strengthen her confidence and trust with her handler.

It is important to understand that dog reactivity does not automatically mean a dog is aggressive, dangerous, or likely to bite. Reactivity is often rooted in emotions such as fear, frustration, anxiety, overexcitement, stress, or a lack of confidence. Many reactive dogs are attempting to create distance from situations that feel overwhelming or uncomfortable, while others may react due to excitement or an eagerness to engage.

Rather than viewing reactivity as a dog being “mean,” it is more accurately understood as a challenge with emotional regulation and coping skills.

Throughout her training program, Salem will receive consistent guidance and structured support to help her understand appropriate behavior in variety of environments and situations, including when guests are present. Our goal is to help Salem become a confident, well-mannered, and well-rounded companion.
