We encourage families to include their dogs in spring & summer lake and boating activities—while keeping safety a top priority. Please consider the following recommendations to protect your pet:
• Keep your dog on a leash when appropriate. This helps prevent unexpected entry into the water, encounters with wildlife, or unsafe interactions with other boats, dogs and people.
• Ensure vaccinations are current. Staying up to date helps protect your dog from preventable diseases, especially when exposed to shared water sources and other animals.
• Provide fresh drinking water at all times. Avoid allowing dogs to drink from lakes or rivers, which may contain harmful bacteria, parasites, or toxic algae.
• Monitor for heat stress. Boats and docks can become very hot. Provide shade and watch for signs such as excessive panting, lethargy, or vomiting.
• Be cautious of harmful algal blooms. Blue-green algae can be life-threatening if ingested. Avoid water that appears discolored, has surface scum, or a foul odor.
• Supervise closely around water and equipment. Keep pets clear of propellers and ensure they are secure when the boat is in motion.
• Rinse and dry your dog after swimming to reduce the risk of skin irritation and ear infections.
If your dog shows signs of illness after water exposure—such as vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or difficulty breathing—seek veterinary care promptly.
Wishing you and your pets a safe and healthy spring & summer season.
