Today I got to help a family choose a new family member! It brought me so much joy! I even gave him a little cleanup before he went home to surprise his new mama for her birthday 🥰
He’s such a lover and was very tolerant of grooming and being handled.

I’m so thankful they trusted me to help them know what to look for and what questions to ask so that he can have his forever home 😍

I’m thankful when owners admit they aren’t a good fit and choose to rehome for the better of the dog! No shame in that!!

It takes a strong person to ask for help and admit that they’re not the best fit for a dog, regardless of how much they love them. In rescue there’s really no room for discrimination, it’s all about education. At the end of the day we are in it for the dogs, and will always help as much as we can. 🐕🐾

One of our volunteers spoke up to a neighbor when he saw a her struggling to care for her puppies. Shortly after birth of these pups, mama dog crossed the rainbow bridge. The owner originally felt that they were best off living with her and wasn’t exactly willing to give them up. Unfortunately at only six weeks old, she could no longer afford to feed them all or get them to a vet. Unaware of the risks, these puppies were being fed chewing to***co as treatment for their worms. With a little coaxing we were called out to pick up one of the puppies, but were fortunate enough to leave with three. With an amazing team of fosters, we were able to save these babies on an emergency basis!

Thank you SO much to Parkside Animal Care Center for seeing us right away! Despite literally coughing up worms in the doc’s office, all of the puppies are healthy! After their decompression period, these fluffy little boys will be available for adoption. 🐶🐶🐶

Never be afraid to speak up and always be strong enough to ask for help. With a little bit of teamwork, just about anything is possible. ❤️

A little summer game!

I divided Lucy’s food into several dishes and spread them out around the yard. First she had to exercise discipline by not being able to eat any until I said she could (she was off lead and following me by command) and second she had to use her nose by sniffing out where I placed each dish. This also forced her to eat a smidge slower!

She was definitely challenged and enjoyed fresh cold hose water after 🤣 and she’s gonna be excited soon because she forgot one dish 😂🤩

Don’t be afraid to get creative using breakfast or dinner! 🐾💕

How does your dog react when you have food for yourself?

Are they in your face or jumping on you?
Do they try to sneak a bite/steal it?
Do they lay at your feet, drooling?
Do they whine or bark at you? Or growl?

Any of the above means they do not respect you. It means they believe they are alpha or are confused about their position in your family pack and this behavior can eventually lead to other issues.

A balanced (meaning they know they’re a follower and know to stay calm and submissive) dog will give space, stay back, avoid, and not interfere when you’re eating, or when any other family members are eating as well.

This can be trained into a dog no matter how long they’ve been allowed to do those first mentioned things!

because there is a difference! 💕🐾

Today I got to work with my fur niece, Valley. She is a 2 year old golden retriever with obsessive behavior over frisbees. We worked specifically on creating a more relaxed state of mind and giving me her focus rather than the frisbee before I’d throw it.

Also, ending the game on my terms (or she’d literally play forever! 🤣) and curbing the continued anxiety/obsession when the frisbee was set down.

I set boundaries and made rules and this is her respecting that. 👏🏼 Yay Valley! Normally she’d be up on the deck trying to grab it and run. She has far to go, as this was only about 45 minutes of psychological work with her but it’s a wonderful start!

When I work with your dog, I don’t bandaid the problem, I work to change their state of mind and create balance which fixes the issue at hand. I train you to be a pack leader. 😉🐾

I am now officially on maternity leave but am SO beyond excited to return to training once I’m healed up and have established a good routine at home with the new baby and my three other children! 🥰

Twice now I’ve met with Durga, a 4m Jack Russell mix 🐾🥰 She has leaps of energy that needed a direction so we started with basic obedience and learning to have calm submissive behavior to get what she wants. Her mom reports she’s doing well!

Last week I had the pleasure of working with Jack, a 4 month old Pom/Rat Terrier mix. He has bounds of energy and needed some guidance to shape him into a well behaved puppy!
Here he is with his owner, getting him to sit without even using words. It’s all body language with dogs! 🐾

Today I worked with handsome Junior, the shop dog at Gene’s Towing. He has major anxiety and fear when loud noises happen (air compressors, starting vehicles, etc) which is often of course... He shakes and runs to hide.

We worked to overcome his fear and though not close to fully relaxed, he made a great first step in his mental recovery. His owners recognize he’s not the happy go lucky boy he once was and want to help him. I’m grateful they’ve reached out for help, it means they’re excellent dog parents and want the best for Junior.
