July 15th is known as National Pet Fire Safety Day. We would love to share some tips for preventing and preparing for fires.

Preventing a fire!:
- Cooking equipment can be different or smell good to dogs. Try to keep pets away from stoves and countertops.
-Stoves can also be accidentally turned on if a pup bumps the dials. If you have a pup who tends to jump onto counters, consider pulling the k***s off the stove, and let us come help!
-Anything with a heating element (Candles, Wax burners, Lamps) can be knocked over by curious noses OR wagging tails!
-Some of our pups are chewers. Watch pets to make sure they don't chew through electrical cords!

Preparing for a fire!:
-Include your pups in your family emergency planning. Discuss who is responsible for grabbing your pets and who should grab supplies (leashes, food, medication, and carriers)
-Put a decal in your home's front window indicating the number and type of pets you have. Providing that information could reduce the time first responders spend searching your home.
-Make sure your pet's correct updated information is on their ID collar AND microchip!

During a fire!:
-Attempt to grab your pets and exit the home as quickly as possible, but if it takes too long to secure them, leave. You should never endanger yourself or get into a situation where a first responder has to go deeper into danger to get you out.
-When first responders arrive, tell them if a pet is still inside and where they may be.
-Grab extra leashes on your way out! Outside will be chaotic, and your pets may try to flee to a calmer area.
-Never reenter a burning house. If you cannot find your pet, leave the door open and call to them repeatedly from a safe distance away. Allow firefighters to take over locating your pets.
