Time to share a little good news! Last month, our team was faced with a difficult situation. The tiniest puppy of a litter (less than 1 month old) presented for inappetence, diarrhea, and retching. Our tests confirmed the biggest fear: Parvovirus! For those who don’t know, parvo is a gastrointestinal virus that is HIGHLY contagious, and in many cases, it can be fatal. Young puppies that are still nursing are the least likely to survive. We hospitalized Tiny and discussed the risks for the rest of the litter and mom. Within only a few hours, mom was symptomatic too. We ended up hospitalizing mom and the whole litter to give them their best chance. Through diligent treatment (including staff and doctors coming in every few hours through the night), monitoring, and syringe feeding those who needed it, our team brought the whole family through the ordeal! Everyone lived! Now, 1 month later, the whole litter paid us a visit to start their vaccines! They’ll be ready to go to their new homes soon! We are so thankful to our team, to the owners who allowed us to give the intensive care, and for specialized treatments such as ozone therapy and the monoclonal antibody parvo treatment that allowed us to bring this story to a happy end!

If you would like to learn more about how to protect your pet from this deadly disease, give us a call. We would love to talk about vaccination for your dog!

Our air conditioning is out, so things got a bit toasty yesterday. Through the day, our lobby was anywhere from 76-80* F! So let’s have a little fun with a pop quiz!

Which species would have felt right at home in our lobby at those temps?

A. Crested gecko
B. Tarantula
C. Rabbit
D. Axolotl

Choose all that apply!
Answers to come later!

We will hopefully get the AC back on soon, but we’re happy to educate while we sweat it out!

When that nap hits juuuust right!!! Miss Frankie had to have an uncomfortable procedure the other day. Our team prioritizes Low Stress Handling, which sometimes involves a little pharmacological assistance! We believe everyone deserves as comfortable and safe a visit as possible! Frankie got her little standing snooze, and she was able to get back to business as usual in no time!

Pet Poison Awareness month:
You may recognize O’Malley, the clinic cat, but many of you don’t know about his recent life threatening toxicity. We want to share his story as a reminder that even surrounded by people who know about the risks of certain poisonous substances, accidents can happen, and early intervention is the key! Last month, O’Malley had a day of enjoying some freedom because we didn’t have any in clinic appointments (the doctors were out on farms all day). He is normally safely in a kennel during business hours. On this day, one of the assistants was counting out a particularly tasty medication, Apoquel chewable, for a prescription that needed filled. They stepped away for a few minutes to help a coworker, and O’Malley seized the opportunity for a delicious, but potentially deadly snack. He quickly consumed a large dog’s entire month supply of Apoquel, which is well beyond the life threatening dose for a cat. Thankfully, our team quickly realized what happened and Dr. Stanton rushed back to the clinic. They were able to decontaminate his stomach and start supportive care. After a week of hospitalization and close monitoring, O’Malley was safe! That level of toxicity could have shut down his kidneys and his bone marrow, but thanks to quick identification and intervention, he is alright! Just remember, poisoning/toxicity can happen to anyone. We must all take steps to make sure to limit exposure and keep our pets safe, but just know that if a toxic exposure occurs, the team at Garrett Veterinary Services will be here for you! Don’t delay!
