An informative and fun page for people who love parrots and want only the best for those birds that share their lives.

We at Parrot Island have designed this page as a fun place to share information, photos, and products pertaining to companion parrots. At Parrot Island, our primary concern is for the well being of your bird. When we opened back in September of 1988 we were a small neighborhood store, affiliated with Kenwood Veterinary Clinic. Our business philosophy was to create a specialty shop that would offer the best knowledge, products, and services available for you and your companion parrot. We hoped to build a clientele primarily through the referral of veterinarians and satisfied customers. We have always felt that working with birds places a responsibility on us to do the best job we can and to encourage the same in our customers. Our intent has always been to provide our customers with the most updated knowledge and benefit of our experience. We have never tried to be a high volume sales store, but to do the best job we know how. This is no more satisfying part of our job than knowing that we have given someone advice and information that allowed them to better understand and care for their parrot.

You never know what might come to your window. This customer's sweet little cockatiel has an alert crest watching the turkey outside. Apparently they meet here often!

Did you know? ...
Your parrot can see colors you cannot. 🦜
Parrots can see ultraviolet light, a part of the light spectrum invisible to human eyes. Their world contains visual details we miss, even when we’re looking at the same thing.
Most humans have three types of color-sensitive cone cells in their eyes. Parrots have four, including one sensitive to ultraviolet light. This gives them an additional dimension of color vision.
For example, feathers can reflect ultraviolet light, revealing differences another parrot can detect. Two birds that look nearly identical to us may look different to each other.
Their eyesight also plays a role in what they eat.
Before your parrot takes a bite, they can assess a food’s color, shape, and appearance. In the wild, visual cues help birds locate food among leaves and branches.
At home, appearance can help explain why your bird approaches one food eagerly and hesitates around another. An unfamiliar color or a different presentation may take time to accept. Taste, texture, and past experiences matter, too.
You share a home, but you don’t see exactly the same world. 💚
