Waterboro Old Home Days 2025 is in the books. The weather was perfection! Our set up was on point & our volunteers were exceptional. We had several challenges that directly impacted our success. The first challenge was technical difficulties with the dunk tank that plagued us all day but volunteers rolled with it & made the best they could out of a tough situation. The second challenge & one that is out of our control was low attendance. Despite the efforts of the Waterboro Old Home Days committee (all volunteers) turnout was the lowest I have seen it in the 8 years we have been doing the event. It is sad because I know the Waterboro Old Home Days committee works very hard all year planning, preparing for, & executing this event for the community. The third challenge we faced was lack of volunteer participation. As of Friday night we had an extensive list of volunteers to help at our booth & dunk tank but when it came to the actual event only a small group of our core volunteers showed & thankfully some high school students came to help & one volunteer recruited 2 family members. Literally we operated with the same volunteers for 15 hours. I cannot tell you how amazing our volunteers were. The high school students were hardworking, upbeat, & polite. They even filled in some volunteer gaps for the Old Home Days committee so that inflatables like the bounce houses & bungee run could remain open throughout the day and they all did long stretches in our dunk tank. Huge thanks to Jordyn, Travis, Connor, & Cooper. You are welcome to volunteer with the pantry any time!
Jeffrey, recruited to help by his daughter, was a freaking rockstar spending hours in our dunk tank, helping to rig the dunk tank when technical issues came up & never once lost his smile or laugh! I am very grateful to him. Shelley who did some time in the dunk tank, assisted with our booth, & helped with tear down & packing up. Elissa & Jerry who gave up their Friday evening to transport all our supplies to the event, helped set it up & then came back Saturday night to help breakdown our set up & transport it all back here to the pantry. Dave Emerson who spent the entire day working our booth, assisted with keeping the dunk tank operating, & watching Raine when I was in the dunk tank. Kayla & Dan who were absolutely phenomenal. They helped set up Friday night, returned Saturday morning staying for the entire event running the dunk tank & helping at the booth for 14 hours - always smiling & laughing.
Last year we raised just under $992 giving us a net profit after expenses of $787. This year we raised $374. Our expenses for the event were $487. Leaving us with a net loss of -$113. It is a difficult loss as we were anticipating another successful event but it is the risk we take doing events. (I will only pout for a few days).
Raine did an amazing job as SpokesDog, melting the hearts of everyone she met for 10 hours.
