The Dorset Equine Rescue is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in the beautiful mountains of Vermont. We were founded in 2012 and our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home abused, neglected and slaughter bound horses. We pride ourselves on being a very transparent organiza

tion and are rated at the platinum level on Guidestar. We are blessed to have a wonderful team of volunteers, staff, and Board of Directors who help out in various ways behind the scenes. Our awesome team evaluates every incoming horse at our organization and provides vet care, rehabilitation and training to better prepare him/her for adoption. To date, we have helped about 400 equines from various neglectful situations. We are proud to be accredited through the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and also be an EQUUS Foundation Guardian. For most horses, meeting their neighbors over the fence is an everyday occurrence. For six-year-old Courage, it’s something we don’t take for granted.

Before Courage arrived at The Dorset Equine Rescue, he had spent years confined to a stall. The gate to his stall was completely embedded in nearly five feet of frozen manure, making it impossible to open. He had no turnout, no opportunity to interact with other horses, and not even a window to look outside and watch the world go by.

Today, things look very different.

Here he is introducing himself to a couple of the Friesian girls over the fence. It may seem like a small moment, but for a horse who spent so long isolated from the simple experiences most horses enjoy every day, moments like these are worth celebrating.

Every curious greeting, every new friendship, and every chance to simply be a horse is another step forward in Courage’s journey.

And judging by the conversation taking place over that fence, we’d say he’s making new friends just fine. ❤️

🌿🌸 Volunteers Needed! 🌸🌿
We're continuing to make progress at our new Forever Farm in Rupert, Vermont, and we'd love your help with our next project!

The overgrown garden next to the farmhouse has already been cleared out, and now we're ready for the next step. We're looking for a few volunteers to help transplant some of the original plants around the house and assist with planning and planting new plants to create a welcoming entrance to the farm.

We still have a couple of spots available for our Garden Volunteer Day on Thursday, June 4th. Whether you're an experienced gardener or simply enjoy working outdoors, we'd love to have you join us.

Please register here:

Every project, big or small, helps us continue transforming the Forever Farm into a beautiful place for both horses and people. Thank you for lending a hand! ❤️🐴🌱

From different paths, to the same safe place. ❤️

Hombre and Indigo, both Mustangs, came to us from very different circumstances. Their journeys before arriving at The Dorset Equine Rescue were not the same, but both ultimately found safety, care, and a second chance here.

Moments like this—grooming each other, enjoying each other’s company, and simply being horses—are a reminder of why rescue matters. Healing isn’t just physical. It’s learning to trust, forming friendships, and feeling secure enough to let your guard down.

Today, Hombre and Indigo are writing a new chapter together, one filled with kindness, companionship, and the freedom to just be horses.

After everything they’ve been through, seeing them share a quiet moment like this reminds us that friendship can be one of the most powerful parts of the healing process. ❤️🐴

No words… just hoofbeats and second chances. ❤️

A little rain wasn’t enough to dampen anyone’s spirits. Shadow and Wick were feeling especially frisky, kicking up their heels, stretching their legs, and enjoying every minute of it.

Watching rescue horses simply be horses never gets old. Thank you for the video Darlene! 🐴

Just over five months ago, Gypsy arrived at The Dorset Equine Rescue after her elderly owner could no longer physically care for her. Her owner loved her deeply, but advancing age and declining health made it impossible to continue providing the care Gypsy needed. This senior mare had gone many years without routine veterinary care, dental work, or vaccinations, and her situation had become increasingly difficult.

When Gypsy arrived, our veterinarian estimated her to be 23 years old and she received a body condition score of just 3.5. She was lacking significant muscle and strength, suffering from severe arthritis, battling a painful ulcer in her eye, and facing concerns about a swelling behind that eye that required close monitoring. Despite everything she had endured, she remained gentle, kind, and trusting.

Today, the difference in Gypsy is remarkable.

While she still has some challenges that come with age, she has gained weight, rebuilt muscle, improved her topline, and is moving much more comfortably. Her coat shines, her eye has healed, and she spends her days doing what horses should be doing—grazing peacefully in green pastures, surrounded by safety, comfort, and friends.

Perhaps most importantly, Gypsy no longer has to worry about where her next meal is coming from or whether anyone will be there to care for her. She is loved, cherished, and receiving the medical attention and support she deserves.

The transformation you see in these photos is a testament to what can happen when a horse is given a second chance—and it is only possible because of supporters like you.

Thank you for helping us say “yes” when horses like Gypsy need us most. ❤️🐴

Our friends at the Fahey Family Ranch are generously hosting a Liberty Horse Fundraiser on Saturday, July 11th (World Horse Day), beginning at 6:00 PM to benefit our friend and volunteer, Tara of Rhythm Hollow Stables in North Bennington, Vermont.

Tara is currently undergoing cancer treatment, and all funds raised through this event will help provide care for her beloved horses while she focuses on her health and recovery.

This family-friendly event is free to attend and will feature a liberty horse demonstration, a question-and-answer session, and several freestyle liberty performances set to music.

There will also be a donation box at the entrance, a pay-what-you-wish bake sale, and a raffle table filled with wonderful donated items. Raffle tickets will also be available for those who are unable to attend but would still like an opportunity to participate and support Tara.

Cancer is hard enough without the added worry of caring for a barn full of horses. As a horse community, we have always come together to support one another during difficult times, and this is an opportunity to do just that. Every dollar raised will go directly to Tara to help care for her horses while she undergoes treatment.

If you’re looking for an enjoyable evening of horses, community, and entertainment, bring the family and join us for a great cause. Tara will receive 100% of the proceeds raised from this event. 💗
