I stole this picture from a friend. With muzzleloader opening Saturday if you happen to find a piece of bone like this at the hit site it is almost always a low front leg hit. I recommend you call a tracker immediately. It is best to get the dog on these as soon as possible and keep them bleeding you can not wait them out like a gut shot. I have been able to get a few every season but it is difficult with our tracking laws and small tracts of land in this area of North Carolina. If you have any questions after the shot please don’t hesitate to give me or another tracker a call it can make the difference in recovering or not recovering your deer. I know it’s difficult but take time after the shot to calm yourself down and assess the situation after the shot. This applies to all of us me included.

Good luck

Remi handed out a tailgate ticket this afternoon. Deer was shot quartering to right behind the shoulder. The exit was just in front of the rear leg. I would have me thought there should have been a river of blood on both sides of the deer but me or the hunter didn’t find a drop for 250 yards to the deer.

So far I have had these 3 that I tracked but didn’t find so back up on camera.

I had some assistant trackers last night. Hunter shot a doe for meat and needed a little help to get it before the coyotes or spoilage. We had a little luck on our side and maybe waited just long enough and made a successful recovery. Had this been a trophy buck I would have suggested waiting before trying to find it. Shot ended up entering center of body but the angle was bad and the exit was just in front of the hind leg. Wasn’t a very long track but didn’t leave much blood after it was bumped out of the first bed.

Remi got # 4 today. Got a call last night about 9:30 hunter had shot his target buck at last light. Waited a couple hours to go back and track the deer. In the meantime a good rain shower passed through and if there was any evidence on the ground it was washed away. I saw absolutely nothing this morning. Hunter stated that the deer came from the east and was facing east at the shot and they believed he left heading east. We took Remi to the hit site and she was showing interest but just wouldn’t really commit to a line. I pushed her to go east. I never go the right way when I may make a decision. After a couple hundred yards she was obviously not tracking the deer. I restarted her at the hit site and she immediately goes west to a creek then up the creek to the deer total distance 150 yards. Shot was back and low. There were multiple beds hunter made a great move not grid searching and pushing the deer out of the area last night. The hunter had shot this same deer high shoulder opening day. The wound was healed and scabbed over.

I got a video from a hunter Thursday night. Hunter asked if this shot was lethal. Yes gut shots are always lethal it’s a matter of time. Conventional thinking is wait 12-24 hours on a shot like this. After talking with the hunter and consulting with another tracker thanks Craig Beachum. We made a plan to go look for the deer Saturday morning which put us at about 36 hours. We found this deer within about 10 minutes it likely died in its first bed. The hunter is happy he got his antlers. The coyotes are happy. Remi is happy she got her deer leg.

Good decision by the hunter to back out and make a plan to recover the deer in my opinion. Just wondering around after the shot grid searching would likely have resulted in this deer being bumped into an area where we could not go find it.

Remi was able to give another one a ride on the tailgate today. Shot was slightly low and back. This deer went 395 yards per the Garmin. Hunter shot it this morning they waited a couple hours and then tracked blood for about 200 yards and lost it at the edge of some standing corn. They gave me a call we got on it around 3:00 and had it within 10-15 minutes.

We had to pull off a deer Thursday night that I am sure is dead due to not having permission. With small tracts of land we have in Yadkin and surrounding counties I would highly recommend getting permission from neighbors to track before the season. I am not going around knocking on doors at midnight.

Cool down after the recovery.

After going to three calls we finally were able to connect on the fourth one. We got a call this morning about a deer that was shot last night. This young man was very accurate and confident about his shot placement and was dead on. Hit was a little back on the left side and exited the right shoulder. They lost blood last night after a couple hundred yards. I put Remi on the track she was confident about it from the start. She did check herself and go back to the hit site once. Pretty much took us straight to the deer 390 yards. Deer was on the creek bank in one of those spots where you just have to be on top of it to see it. Hunter has been after this deer with the unique brow tine for 3 seasons glad he gave us a chance to help finish this hunt.

I guess that’s it. We found 24 out of about 75. I learned a lot made a lot of mistakes. There’s probably 3 deer I could have gotten if I had done things a little differently. Remi really put the puzzle together this year I pulled her off of more tracks than we actually lost.
A few were high back/ neck spinal shock shots

I had a couple gut shots just go to far somewhere w couldn’t get them

I went to a couple misses

I went to a couple calls that were over 2 days old actually got one of them

The most common call I have been to since gun season came in is a low front leg hit I believe we got 3 of them but they are difficult to get because of terrain small tracks of land I tracked 2 of them 2 miles 2 more a mile at least

I got 2 back leg hits they don’t seem to go as far as the front leg hit deer.
