Happy 9 months 🐾 to our June 17, 2025 “babies”
Our sweetie pies are well into in the adolescent stage now. Not babies, not adults yet. Welcome to the “teenage velociraptor” phase.
Sexual maturity
Males are mounting, marking, and full of energy. Females may start coming into heat (if they haven’t already). Be ready with dog panties and patience. Heat lasts a couple of weeks. They’re only receptive for a few days, which can be tricky to spot. They will be drama queens and will get sassier on a schedule you don’t get to see. Remember we’re keeping them intact to protect their joints and bones.
Testing the pack
This is normal too. They’re figuring out boundaries with other dogs and humans. Stay calm, clear, and consistent. Your rules are non-negotiable, even if they give you the side-eye. If you’re not their leader they will think they are yours.
Impulse control
Doors, toys, and food on the coffee table or countertop are all fair game in their eyes. Short, fun training sessions help build focus and self-control. “Leave it” is an invaluable command to teach!
Emotional ups and downs
Excitement, boredom, loneliness and frustration show up as mouthing, barking, destroying things or total chaos. Acknowledge it, redirect, reward calm behavior.
Confidence and socialization
Some young dogs will hesitate in new situations (even if they haven’t up until now). Just as before positive exposure in small doses makes them confident adults.
Bonding
Walks, training, and problem-solving together builds trust. And gives you a few minutes to remember why you signed up for this.
The payoff
A well-trained German Shepherd is amazing to live with. Calm, confident, devoted and fun. One that isn’t trained is exhausting, frustrating, and is awful to live with and may plot world domination from your living room. Every bit of effort now is worth it.
Don’t forget
This stage is messy, but temporary. Stick with routines, training, and celebrate small wins. You’ve got this—and so do they. 💕
