EP 10: 4H Projects

Did you know that ANYONE can put stuff in the fair? Whether this be photography, paintings, sculptures, anything! You do not have to show an animal to enter in a craft.

If your youth (18 and under) it doesn't cost anything to put stuff in the fair, if your older than that then it's like 50 cents per enter (I think).

AND the fair will give you money depending on the ribbons you get! It's just a cool little bonus.

Anyways that's all for today, this vid was kinda just more explaining that there's more to the fair than showing animals lol! Have a good day :)

EP 9 - Multi Tasking

Hey guys!

Today there will be no video:(, I've spent all day working on the name plates for my birds and it got me thinking....

As important as it is to prepare your animal/s for the fair, it's also important to prepare yourself for the chaotic week.

If it's your first time showing, then your heading into this blind. There are going to be so many new experiences and your going to be nervous. However being nervous is the best part! I can speak in front of a camera and try to tell you what it will be like, but everyone's first year will be different. I speak on my own personal experience in The Washington County Fair & every fair is different!

If this is your 2nd or 3rd year showing, DO NOT be hard on yourself for things you "should've done". I know my 2nd year I looked back at my first year and said "I should've done, this, this, & this". Then I tried to fix it and it was A MESS!!! Now here I am in my 4th year of showing and I still learn something every year still! And even though it's my 4th year I still feel nervous because that means I still have something to learn.

You have to learn to multi task, it will be the only skill that will be able to help you the most. You need to be able to feel the excitement & nervousness while still making sure your animal/s are well taken care of. You need to be able to feel the excitement & nervousness while still scooping out the p**p from their cage.You need to be able to feel all these things and still be fully capable of dealing with everything else at the same time!

Anyways that's all for today! Enjoy these name plates (the small ones are for the ducklings) & Cucumbers is still in the works!

EP 8 - Scheduling

Being Organized is definitely the most important part of showing at the fair (or anywhere really).

Personally mine are always color coded with times, places, ect. It really helps me keep track of everything during fair week!

To find all the information you would need go onto your fairs website and go to the section for Exhibitors. There you should find your fairs hand book!

Yall remember those guineas we bought a little while ago, right?

Well one decided she wanted to be a Mama! However... Guineas are awful mama's & parents, so over the course of 3 hours we were able to get 14 babies!

EP 7 - Pullorum- PT 2

Pullorum testing is MANDATORY if your going to show Poultry (Excluding Waterfowl).

Whatch EP 6 and then vome back to this one if you haven't already tuned in!

When doing a Pullorum test they will go under the wing, prick, then collect the blood. They then mix the blood with Pullorum Anti agents. If it's still red they are negative & if its clumpy at all then it's positive.

DO NOT LOOSE YOUR TEST!!! You will have to show this when checking in your birds to the Superintendents.

EP 6: Pullorum- PART 1

Pullorum is a deadly bacterial disease, and it spreads by either hen to eggs or bird to bird. One singles bird with Pullorum can infect your entire flock.

The way they test for Pullorum is a simple blood test! Every fair is going to have a requirement that your bird be tested and it must come back Negative!

Cucumber is the only bird in our flock the needs to be tested!

EP 5 : Responsibilities

Some of your responsibilities during the fair may be :

1. Checking on your Bird DAILY

Some people drop off their bird at the Washington County Fair & just leave it there all week. Go check on your Bird atleast once a day.

2. Sign up for a morning CLEAN.

No one can take care of 300+ birds by themselves, it's really a group effort. Some barns REQUIRE you to. Yes they can be grueling at 6am but it really shows your active in the barn!

3. Communication

You have to give us a solid way to contact you in case of an emergency!!! Have your phone on you & don't have it on silent.

EP 4 : Standard of Perfection

The SOP is really based off what the APA says (American Poultry Association), Your bird WILL NOT fit the SOP to a tea!

Every bird is different, use the SOP as a guideline NOT a rule Book.

You don't have to have the Book or a book, Google is free. A quick search can tell you all you need to know!

EP : 3 ~ Wellfare Check

A Wellfare check is when yourself or someone else checks the overall health of your bird. For the fair it will either be a Barn Superintendent or a Veterinarian.

Wellfare checks SHOULD NOT start the week of the fair! This should be a weekly thing you do. Just go in and pay attention to your birds to see if one isn't acting right.

The thing's they will look at are the eyes, nose, and legs of the bird, along with looking at it's plumage (feathers) for anything abnormal.

EYES - if there's bubbles and/ or alot of gunk coming out of their eyes. This could be a upper respiratory infection or conjunctivitis.

NOSE - Yucky snot constantly coming out could be a sinus infection.

FEET - Discoloration and/or bumps could be bumble foot.
