You never know what life has in store for you. If you had told me 5 years ago that I would be doing acupuncture on pigs and sheep, I would have laughed. Fast forward to this past Monday, and that is EXACTLY what I was doing. A big thank you to Ziggy's Refuge Farm Sanctuary for entrusting me with the care of their beloved animals, including their namesake, Ziggy. The work I did there really helped me remember my WHY for this career I have chosen, and helped re-ignite a passion for helping animals of all species!

Ziggy's Refuge just got just over 160 pigs from a hoarding case. They are working around the clock to provide all the care necessary to nurse these pigs back to health and give them the life they deserve. If you are able, consider donating! Any amount helps. If you can't donate, visit their page and share their story!

🌟 What Is an Acupoint?

An acupoint (acupuncture point) is a specific spot on the body where nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue, and muscle come together in a unique way.

In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), these points lie along pathways called meridians, which are channels that carry energy (Qi) throughout the body.

From a modern medical perspective, many acupoints:
-Overlie nerve bundles
-Sit in small muscle grooves
-Have higher electrical conductivity
-Influence circulation and inflammation

When we gently stimulate these points with very thin, sterile needles, we activate the body’s own healing response.

🐶🐱🐴 How Do Acupoints Help Our Patients?

Each acupoint has specific therapeutic effects. By selecting certain points, we can:
✨ Reduce pain
✨ Decrease inflammation
✨ Improve nerve function
✨ Relax tight muscles
✨ Support organ function
✨ Boost immune response
✨ Calm anxiety

For example:
1. A senior dog with arthritis may receive points that improve circulation to the hips and reduce joint inflammation.
2. A cat with kidney disease may receive points that support kidney energy and improve appetite.
3. A performance horse may receive points to relieve back soreness and enhance muscle recovery.

🧠 What Happens During Treatment?
When an acupoint is stimulated, it sends signals through the nervous system to the brain and spinal cord. This can trigger:
-Release of endorphins (natural pain relievers)
-Improved blood flow
-Muscle relaxation
-Release of inflammatory mediators

💛 Is It Safe?
Yes — when performed by a trained veterinary professional, acupuncture is:
-Extremely safe
-Minimally invasive
-Well tolerated by dogs, cats, and horses

🌿 The Big Picture
Acupoints give us a way to:
-Treat pain without relying solely on medications
-Support chronic conditions
-Enhance recovery after injury or surgery
-Improve overall quality of life

Acupuncture works beautifully alongside conventional veterinary medicine — it’s not “either/or,” it’s integrative care.
If you’re curious whether acupuncture could help your pet, I’m always happy to answer questions!

“What exactly are Yin and Yang — and how does that apply to my animal?”

Let’s break it down in a way that makes sense for our dogs, cats, horses, and even our pocket pets 🐶🐱🐴🐰

☯️ What Are Yin and Yang?
Yin and Yang come from the philosophy behind Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) — the medical system that guides veterinary acupuncture.

They describe balance within the body and even the world around us.

Yin = cooling, nourishing, moistening, restful energy
Yang = warming, active, moving, functional energy

Neither is “good” or “bad.”
Health happens when they are in harmony.

YIN qualities include:
-Rest
-Cooling
-Fluids
-Structure (organs, blood, body tissues)
-Aging and senior changes

When a pet is Yin deficient, we might see:
-Nighttime restlessness
-Dry skin or coat
-Heat-seeking or cool-seeking behavior changes
-Anxiety in the evening
-Chronic inflammatory issues

YANG qualities include:
-Movement
-Warmth
-Energy
-Circulation
-Metabolism

When a pet is Yang deficient, we might see:
-Cold intolerance
-Sluggishness
-Weight gain
-Weak hind end
-Digestive slowdown

🌗 It’s Not Either/Or
Every single species I treat — from cats to performance horses — has both Yin and Yang.

Acupuncture works by:
-Supporting what’s deficient
-Calming what’s excessive
-Restoring balance between Yin and Yang

💛 Why This Matters for Your Pet
When we look at your animal through a Yin/Yang lens, we aren’t just treating a symptom - such as arthritis pain. We are looking at your animal as a whole and treating any imbalances that we see on that particular day.

We’re asking:
-Is this condition hot or cold?
-Is it excess or deficiency?
-Is the body exhausted or overstimulated?

That’s how we build individualized treatment plans.
And it’s why two dogs with “arthritis” may receive completely different acupuncture protocols.

If you’re curious about your pet’s Yin/Yang balance, feel free to ask at your next appointment — I love educating owners about how beautifully interconnected these systems are.
Balance is health.

Did you know that Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) has been around for thousands of years and can be used to treat pain conditions, GI disease, Respiratory Disease, Skin Disease, Endocrine Disease, and more? TCVM can be used in conjunction with western medicine or used alone as alternative to western medicine. TCVM combines Acupuncture, Herbal Therapy, Food therapy, and Tui-na (medial massage and manipulation) to help balance the body and maintain health.

Owners with animals that are afraid of needles, often think that they cannot explore TCVM as a viable option due to the needle phobia. Fortunately, that is often not the case. Choosing herbal therapy, food therapy, or Tui-na can have benefits even without acupuncture. Although these forms of therapy can take a little longer to see results. However, did you know that acupoints don’t always have to be stimulated by needles? Laser Acupuncture uses a targeted laser beam to pe*****te the tissues and activate acupoints WITHOUT the stress of inserting a needle.

Shen Bright Mobile Veterinary Services is proud to announce that we are now offering Laser Acupuncture as well as traditional cold laser therapy for treating local areas of pain, swelling, wounds, and infections. We also offer laser rental services for those pets that need more frequent treatments.

Wow! Rue Muppet did great for her very first acupuncture session!

Rue holds such a special place in my heart, and last night was a testament to how far this sweet girl has come. Rue had a rough start to life which resulted Liver Qi Stagnation and a Shen Disturbance. Rue is a very sensitive girl, so we started her on herbal therapy (Shen Calmer) prior to ever placing a single needle. Thanks to the dedication of her moms, a lot of love and patience, and a more balanced Shen, Rue was able to accept her first needles last night. We can now focus on the stagnation (pain) in her hips. A little bit of Churu and Rue was a happy camper through her entire needling session. Way to go sweet girl!

Congo falling asleep during his acupuncture session on Sunday. We have been dealing with a lot of stagnation with this guy, which has resulted in a lot of pain. It is good to see him relax and get that Qi and blood flowing freely.
