Teaching calm is one of the greatest gifts we can give our dogs 🫶🏻😌

When people think about dog training, they often think of commands like sit, stay, or come.

But one of the most important skills a dog can learn isn’t a command at all.

It’s how to be calm.

The truth is, emotional regulation isn’t something dogs are born with. Just like children, dogs have to learn how to manage excitement, frustration, and big emotions. Research and behavior experts refer to this as impulse control or emotional self-control, and it’s a skill that develops through consistent practice, not punishment.

Too often we unintentionally reward excitement. We open the door when our dog is bouncing, throw the ball while they’re barking, or greet them with the same energy they’re giving us. Over time, they learn that excitement makes good things happen.

Instead, we can teach them that calm is what opens doors. Calm starts the walk. Calm earns attention. Calm brings the rewards.

That doesn’t mean expecting your dog to never be excited. Dogs should absolutely play, run, explore, and have fun. But they also need to learn how to come back down. The ability to switch from excitement to relaxation is just as important as the ability to play.

One of the easiest ways to teach this is by noticing and rewarding the moments your dog chooses calm on their own. If they lie down quietly, take a deep breath after something exciting, settle on their bed, or simply watch the world without reacting, acknowledge it. Those are the moments worth reinforcing. Trainers call this capturing calm, and over time those quiet choices become habits.

Remember, every interaction is teaching something.

If we consistently reward frantic behavior, we’ll get more of it.

If we consistently reward thoughtful, relaxed behavior, we’ll get more of that too.

A truly well-trained dog isn’t the one who can perform the most tricks.

It’s the one who knows how to relax, recover from excitement, and feel safe enough to simply exist in the world.

Because calm isn’t just a personality trait.

It’s a life skill and one that’s absolutely worth teaching.
