there is a woman that is making false claims about me and my apprentice about trims we have done on her horses that left out many facts of her own horse care. Now she has actually taken to harassing me and her post are getting more and more malicious, Facebook has been contacted so she is now posting anonymously on other groups. If you have any questions about my work or this situation feel free to talk to me and I will give you references of many happy clients. Sorry that misinformation is so easily spread. Normally I let my work speak for itself but when she drags my young apprentice in on it I feel like others should be warned. She told me herself that she couldn’t keep or get a farrier, shame on me for not noticing that huge red flag. I would like to thank all of my amazing clients who know, trust and appreciate my work.

Did you know? Landings can be postural?

Farriers are taught to pay close attention to how a horse lands.

Medial first? Lateral first? Toe first? Heel first? Level?

And this is important. Gross hoof imbalance can alter distal limb alignment, influence the orientation of the hoof as it meets the ground and create a pathological environment. Correcting that imbalance can absolutely improve landing.

But there is an important distinction that is often missed! The farrier does not have complete control over the landing.

Why?

Because landing occurs at the end of swing phase. During swing, the position of the hoof is being determined by the entire limb above it.

Muscle activation controls joint flexion and extension. The orientation of the carpus or tarsus, fetlock and distal joints influences the final position of the hoof. Tendon tension provides proprioceptive information to the nervous system. Conformation affects limb trajectory. Posture changes joint relationships. Fatigue and neuromuscular tone can alter limb placement. Myofascial physiology can create constrictions.

So the hoof that eventually meets the floor is the endpoint of a whole-body movement strategy.

I had a great example of this while working on a horse in Norway.

Before shoeing, the horse had a lateral landing. I assessed the hoof and corrected what I considered to be the underlying three-dimensional hoof imbalance.

Then we watched the horse again. The landing got worse. It was now landing very obviously on the lateral toe quarter.

At first glance, you might reasonably conclude that the shoeing was wrong. And if your primary measure of mediolateral balance is a level landing, the logical response would be to take the shoe back off and remove more lateral toe until the horse landed flatter.

But I was confident in the balance I had established. So rather than continuing to manipulate the hoof to chase the visual landing, we looked further up the system.

A fascial manipulation practitioner who was working with me assessed the horse and identified significant restrictions through the chest. She treated those restrictions.

We changed nothing on the foot. We watched the horse again. It landed level.

That is a hugely important clinical lesson. The hoof had not changed. The shoe had not changed. The trim had not changed. The horse above the hoof had changed.

This is entirely consistent with the framework developed in my upcoming book. Changes in posture, muscle tone or fascial stiffness within the scapulothoracic sling can influence swing phase, limb placement and therefore landing behaviour. Farriery can influence posture and landing, but it operates within constraints imposed by the rest of the neuromuscular and myofascial system.

This is why we need to understand the difference between landing and loading.

Landing is primarily a kinematic event. It describes the orientation of the hoof at initial ground contact. Loading is a kinetic event. Once the hoof contacts the ground, force rises, the centre of pressure migrates, joint moments develop and the structures of the digit begin resolving ground reaction force.

And importantly!

Landing does not reliably predict loading.

Research discussed in the book has shown that the orientation of initial contact does not reliably correspond to centre-of-pressure distribution later in stance. A horse can land laterally and subsequently load centrally. A visually level landing can still develop asymmetric loading as force increases.

This matters because the hoof does not remodel according to what it did for the first instant of contact.

Morphology reflects the forces applied, sustained and accumulated through stance.
And this forces must be resolved by the rest of the body.
Impulse and repeated midstance loading contribute to the time-dependent deformation and adaptation that ultimately shape the hoof capsule and create a bi-directional relationship between hoof morphology and posture.

So imagine what could have happened in the Norway case.

If I had looked only at the lateral landing and continued removing lateral hoof until it looked level, I might have altered a hoof that was already mechanically balanced in an attempt to compensate for a problem originating elsewhere in the system.

I could have created hoof imbalance to compensate for postural asymmetry.

That is the danger of chasing landings.

This does not mean we ignore landing. Farriers absolutely influence it, and grossly abnormal landing can be valuable information.

It means we need to recognise its variables and, importantly, recognise the limits of trimming and shoeing.

Once hoof imbalance has been appropriately addressed, persistent landing asymmetry should make us ask another question!

Is the hoof still causing the landing, or is the landing now telling us something about the horse? Or is it simply normal for that individual?

The relationship works in both directions.

Hoof balance → limb orientation → proprioception → muscle and fascial tone → posture.

But also

Posture → muscle and fascial tone → limb orientation and swing phase → landing → stance mechanics → impulse → hoof morphology.

It is a closed loop.

And that means good modern farriery sometimes requires knowing when not to take any more hoof away.

This distinction between landing and loading, how posture influences the hoof, how the hoof influences posture, and where the limits of farriery sit within that system is exactly the kind of discussion we will be getting into during the TED USA Tour clinics.

Because sometimes the most important thing a landing tells the farrier is that the answer isn’t in the foot.

There’s something to be said for taking your ego out of hoof care and the horse world in general.

At the end of the day, the horse gets the final say. Not our ego, not our reputation, not how long we’ve been in the trade, and not whether we want to prove that our way is the “right” way.

Every horse is different. Every foot is different. Every situation can teach you something. You can do everything “right” and a particular horse will still make you scratch your head as to what you’re missing.

And honestly, you can learn from just about anyone in this trade if you’re willing to listen. Someone who has been trimming for 30 years can teach you something. Someone who has been doing it for 3 can teach you something. A different method, a different perspective, a little trick to save your body, or even something that makes you question what you thought you knew.

That doesn’t mean you have to agree with everyone. It means you can respect the fact that none of us have it all figured out and if someone says they do they probably stopped learning long ago.

The moment our ego becomes more important than the horse in front of us, we’ve lost sight of what this work is really about.

How much do you actually watch your horse?

Not ride them. Not train them. Not ask them to do anything.

Just watch.

Watch how they walk out of the stall. How they stand tied to the trailer. How they eat. How they move around after a haul. How they warm up before you really start asking for anything. How they cool down. How they interact with other horses. What they do when they’re comfortable versus when something feels a little off.

I think knowing what’s normal for each individual horse is one of the most valuable tools we have.

Sometimes the first sign that something needs attention isn’t a head bob or an obvious problem. It’s the horse that normally cleans up suddenly leaving a little feed. The one that usually stands square constantly resting the same leg. A change in attitude. A different way of carrying themselves. Something small that you’d probably never notice if you weren’t paying attention on the ordinary days.

Good horsemanship isn’t only what happens when you’re in the saddle.

🚨Acute laminitis emergency protocol

Here is the BEVA - The British Equine Veterinary Association emergency protocol for treatment of acute laminitis (especially important for laminitis driven by hyperinsulinemia).

There are organisations and “rehab” centres whom proudly deny horses some of the emergency BEVA procedures (highlighted in yellow below).

If you suspect your horse is suffering from acute laminitis - please work with your vet and HCP to implement this protocol.

No horse should be denied drugs that can rapidly reduce hyperinsulinemia and no horse should be denied a trim that is well established to reduce pain.

Stone Hoof Care wrapped up another fantastic series of classes last week! It was a great mix of two returning students and three new students, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group.

There were lots of great questions, thoughtful discussions, and conversations that really got everyone thinking. Watching the students build their understanding and confidence throughout the week is one of my favorite parts of teaching.

They all did an excellent job on their trims, and I’m excited to see how their skills continue to develop as they put what they’ve learned into practice.

Thank you all for your hard work, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn. I can’t wait to watch you continue to blossom. See you at the next class! 🌿🐴

🐴 What is Gait Analysis & Why Might Your Horse Benefit From It? 🐴

Your horse’s feet don’t work independently—they are part of a whole-body system. The way a horse moves can tell us a lot about what is happening above and below the hoof.

A gait analysis is an evaluation of your horse’s movement using recorded video and specialized motion analysis software. The software objectively measures your horse’s movement, including factors such as symmetry, stride characteristics, limb loading, and movement patterns that can be difficult to detect with the naked eye alone.

Many horses develop compensations over time. Sometimes the hoof changes first and affects the way the horse moves. Other times, the horse’s posture, muscles, joints, or previous injuries influence how the hoof wears and grows.

A gait analysis can be especially helpful for:
🐎 Horses with chronic lameness or “mystery” soreness
🐎 Performance horses looking to optimize movement
🐎 Horses recovering from injury
🐎 Horses transitioning to barefoot
🐎 Horses being evaluated for corrective trimming or composite applications
🐎 Owners who simply want a better understanding of their horse’s movement

A gait analysis is not a lameness diagnosis and does not replace a veterinary examination. It is an objective assessment tool that provides additional information about how your horse is moving.

The goal is not just to look at the hoof—it’s to look at the horse as a whole and gather more information to better understand movement.

Movement tells a story. Sometimes we just need the right tools to help us read it.
