Now, this may not be a very glamorous post, but it is a win for me and Kimber.

Kimber and I have been working hard on some duration training and I have been feeling pretty defeated lately in this particular venture.

Well today, Kimber reminded me it’s not always, okay never, one and done in dog training. I asked her up onto the chair at work, then got called away.

Five minutes later, I walked back to find her still sitting proudly right where I left her. Patience and consistency always pay off! 🥳

Most people think that Milkbones and Ol' Roys are all a dog needs to happily train. Hate to break it to you, but that cool roll-over trick you've been trying to teach (and failing to), probably needs something a little more tasty.

While there's nothing wrong with the crunchy, hard treats for a fun snack, training usually requires a more varied approach to the rewards we provide. I like to think of training as a job for my dog, and that means they need to be paid what the job is worth.

Easy tasks they know? A lower value, less enticing crunchy treat or simple training treat will work great. For new stuff? Challenging stuff? I break out better goods like freeze-dried minnows, beef liver, or even baked chicken.

So next time you're struggling in a training session, take a look at your rewards! Are they worth working for? Or more of a lazy day snack?
