Kimber and I have a final test coming up and we have to chain together 10 behaviors, no reinforcement until the end. We’re getting there! Still a long way to go.

Background:

I wanted Kimber to stop at every threshold leading outside and wait for her release cue, in other words “stop until I give you permission”.

Where we live and work wildlife, loose dogs, traffic, random people walking all mean I want to check the surroundings before I let my dogs go to ensure their safety.

We’ve worked very hard on this, of course with failure, but today Kimber proved she’s gone beyond even my expectations.

Today’s win:

We’re at work, and Kimber has been a trooper while we’re slammed busy. This girl downed some water after enjoying a tasty bone and naturally a bit later she started doing her “okay I HAVE to go NOW mom!!” dance. Not just “can I go out?”, it was now or never.

I let her out of her gated area, not realizing the back door to our building is open. I walk around the corner, and there she is, stopped at the threshold, doing her potty dance, eagerly waiting for me to release her to go outside. I quickly checked for animals and made sure the back gate was shut to the road, and cued her to freedom.

Our latest project is coming along nicely! Kimber started with touch targeting under leg, then together steps targeting, and finally faded the target. Now we’re putting it on cue so she knows what I’m asking, as she also has a “center” behavior (sitting between my legs) that’s pretty similar.

You may have seen a post involving a vacuum cleaner in our kitchen. Well for the cue to work more than just in the kitchen and with the vacuum, we have to generalize!

Here we are taking a quick break at work introducing Kimber to the cue in a ‘new’ place and a new object. She’s doing great!

It’s National Pet Day! This is the perfect day to celebrate the wonderful pets and recognize their incredible impact on our lives.

Both my pups have been having trouble getting tangled up around bushes, trees, stumps, poles, anything vertical really, while on lead.

So, what do I do? Teach them how to go around! This keeps them calmer, no panicking that they’re suddenly stopped and stuck, and gives me ability to ask them to go around instead of having to crawl into the bush too. 🤪 🤕

Plus, have to be happy that Kimber isn’t afraid of the vacuum. 😎
