Occasionally we will get some snow on the ground during Michigan’s deer season and it definitely slows down the amount of calls that come in. We have however had a few tracks where the snow hit the ground after the hunter had shot the deer which completely covered any visible sign for tracking the deer. The snow traps the scent particles to the ground and makes for an easy track for a trained tracking hound.

Here are two of my favorite tracks done with my Bloodhound Crockett. Both tracks were over a mile long with portions of difficult terrain, creek crossings, road crossings, scent pools, ect. Both tracks taught me a lot about Crocketts deminar when he’s on the correct trail and when he is super close to the target deer. My favorite moment was from the track that we did this season, after advancing from the hunters last blood we got to a bean field that the deer crossed through, the farmer had just finished cutting it and I was concerned that Crockett would stuggle to find the deers trail going through the bean field. It was the first time that I’ve delt with a situation like that and Crockett really impressed me.

#43 found by Boone this morning.

Came in at the 16 hr mark. Boone had a little scuffle with this buck and fortunately wasn’t hurt. Moving forward all of my hounds will have there gore vests on while tracking. I am very thankful that I learned this lesson without a trip to the vet 🙏.

Went fishing for a buck Boone tracked yesterday. Boone tracked it into the pond and sure enough it surfaced today. Deer that expire in water typically take 24-48 hours to surface.

This video pretty much sums up the calls we received and took during the 2024 youth hunt 😂😂. Overall a fun weekend, and I strongly feel like both of my dogs did their jobs over the weekend, the proof of life pics usually take a couple weeks to come in. Congrats to all of the successful youth hunters over the weekend!!!!
