Claddagh Farm & Orchard

Claddagh Farm & Orchard Welcome to our homestead! We grow produce & raise heritage breed poultry, as well as grow an orchard full of various fruits.

We also rescue injured wildlife and transport to appropriate facilities. The new homestead is being adapted to suit our needs and to include the new orchard.

We did not have as good of a year on produce as we had hoped. Between a bad soil mix, a tilling mishap, and some plant disease, it is unlikely we will have produce to sell. We learned a lot about growing on our new farm though this year! The good news is our trees are doing great, we are getting a lot of infrastructure in place for next year, and we are blessed to have this country home to enjoy regardless of produce. We will post if we have anything to share or sell this year after all, but in the meantime, we will keep working toward tasty things to share for next year!

On the farm, holiday weekends are for farm work! Today we hope to get all of our seedlings in the ground, along with hopefully some seeds! Not pictured, the rest of my torso covered with what I am telling myself is dirt, not manure.

Something to know about our farm, we try to do a lot of the farm work on nights and weekends. Because of Steve's back injury, he has weight restrictions and other limitations so we try to make a lot of adjustments and Sam and I (Cari) do a lot of the heavier work. A perk of a 3-day weekend for us, we have time to both work on the farm and relax together as a family! As we celebrate this weekend, we are thankful for those who lost their lives in service to our country and we hope for peace around the world.

We completed another big project recently. It's Michigan, so naturally we have lots of deer that hang around the farm. Last year, they chewed our blueberry bushes into little nubs. So, this year we built a 6-foot fence around our berry patch, raised beds, and a portion of the garden. This should be sufficient in deterring them so we can actually get some berries!

We are starting up a small flock of birds rather than our usual large flock due to increased cost and physicality of care. We may expand in the future, but for now we have just a few birds that are growing fast. They did get to have an exciting adventure in their first week of life. We lost power unexpectedly one cold night, and the chicks were too little to be without their heat lamp for long. Luckily, my (Cari) parents were still up and willing to help out. We loaded the chicks and their luggage, cranked up the heat, and rushed across town. Grandpa kept a close eye on the chicks and kept us updated until our power was back on and we were able to bring them home. Life is never boring here on the farm!

It’s Spring on the farm! We are expanding our garden and produce this year! We have lots of seed starts going already and will be planting more soon. We filled our raised beds this weekend, which should hopefully make our garden much more accessible this year. We hope to have lots of produce to sell this fall including pumpkins, Heirloom tomatoes, Honey Boat delicata squash, watermelons, and more. Stay tuned for farm updates as we get more established this year!

It's a cold one out there today! I (Cari) went outside to shovel and about froze my face off. We're looking forward to spring here on the farm. Right now these pictures show nothing but snow, but in a few months we hope they show lots of produce!

The farm is quiet lately as we work through our hiatus. We are spending this time working more on our house and ebay resale shop. Farm repairs and preparation will begin more in February, but in the meantime, we are inside staying warm! Hope your 2025 is off to a great start and you are finding beauty where you can.

Some sad news from the farm. Our birds contracted an illness, either from wild birds or from some birds we purchased this summer. After consultation with a local veterinarian, MSU, and MDARD, our entire flock had to be euthanized. Any eggs we had left were safe, but unfortunately the meat from the birds cannot be salvaged as the illness makes them inedible. Though losses like this are a part of farm life, it has been tough on our family as you would imagine, particularly our ducks who have lived with us as pets for several years. With that being said, we will work on getting our coop cleaned out and fixed up through the winter, saving up some funds, and start a new (and maybe different!) flock in the spring. Stay tuned for future updates!

After moving the farm last fall, we've been working hard to get reestablished this spring and summer. We've worked a lot on the orchard, and done a lot of landscaping to make sure the house stays in good shape too! We may have some poultry for sale this fall, but most things will be at least another year. We're excited to be working so hard on the farm and looking forward to sharing our results with you all!! Still lots and lots (and lots and lots and lots) of work to do, but we're making progress!
