Neffland Farm

Neffland Farm This is a group for all people raising poultry in the Detroit Metro Area, as well as people who are interested in supporting local poultry.

We can share ideas, insights, lobby for our rights, and market our products. We can also post when we have chicks and eggs for sale or trade, or collectively order from a hatchery if we have several members interested in a particular breed. Most of all, it will a great place to share our pics and experiences in raising chickens, ducks, geese, and turkey!

Deviled eggs for 4th of July? Duck eggs are spectacular. Besides laying eggs, the ducks provide fertilizer for the vineyard. This is the first year of productivity, and the grapes are abundant. Thank you, ducks! As always, DM me if you would like eggs. $5 for 1/2 dozen, equal to 9 chicken eggs. Easy payment and pickup.

One regret that I always had is that I didn't name the egg farm Meg's Eggs. Laid In Detroit was cute and all, but when Meg came along, I knew it had to change. That is one reason why we expanded and re-branded to Neffland Farm, to give me some freedom in marketing.

Meg was a great guardian of the ducks, choosing to sleep outside with them from the age of 5 months, a prodigy. Because of her, the ducks had freedom to live their lives like ducks in the wild, but also have great nutrition and protection. They hatched young, explored their territories, and lived long lives all because of her.

This brings us to the new packaging--actual half dozen duck egg cartons (equal to nine chicken eggs), perfect for the duck egg long time connoisseur or the first time adventurous eater, with photos and stories of the dogs and ducks that will change from time to time. Fun for the family, or even as a gift!

$5/carton with easy pickup and payment. DM me for details!

A few weeks after Meg-a-dog crossed the bridge, I started getting an unwanted visitor. A predator, probably a mother raccoon, has been sneaking onto the farm in the wee hours of the morning, eating eggs, disrupting the worm colony, and carving pumpkins. This raccoon has been casing the place, because she shows up right after the ducks lay eggs, and leaves just before Gemma wakes up. (She always naps at the foot of my bed after running around all night.) We might have to change up our routine to outsmart the masked bandit...

I made a bed for Christmas trees.
Instead I planted a Great Pyrenees....
But seriously, these trees
are giving me anxieties.

Even though I'm not quite done with the pot in pot tree plot, I started planting them. The concolor fir doesn't thrive in captivity like the Black Hills spruce, and even the spruce scared me when some of them turned brown. Too much water? Not enough water? Temperature too volatile in the spring? The answer is to get them in the sandy bed. Hopefully consistent water and temps will give the seedlings a good start. Thankfully the spruce are all showing signs of growth, and most of the firs are doing OK. Now Gemma needs to not sit on them....

Lately the ducks are competing for style points on their egg laying. The egg nestled next to the grap vine is very artistic. The clutch in the spare tire is ingenious. But I think the winner is the one in the middle of 100 Christmas trees. How did she get in there?

I was expecting these concolor firs I ordered to be 8-14", as described. Instead they are 8-38". I guess natural trees are like natural bo***es. They come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes they don't match.

I am CHUFFED! This week, our next investment arrived. Christmas trees! We got Black Hills spruce and concolor fir. They will be offered as live potted trees for the holidays with the option to donate them to The Greening of Detroit.

There's one problem. They were all supposed to be small like the ones in the orange bucket. For some reason the concolor fir are huge! I had to rush order larger pots and totally change the scope of my project. The good news is they will definitely be big enough come December!

With the expansion of the property, came the expansion of offerings. This year, we should be harvesting grapes from our Itasca and Marquette vines. Installing the vineyard requires a lot if hole digging, and the ducks follow me around the yard in search of worms.

When it seems like I am not getting enough eggs, it usually means there is a secret nest somewhere. I finally found this one, a double wide the two best friends built together with 24 eggs! As much as I would love to let them hatch outside, I don't need 24 ducks. There is also a hawk who has figured out that she can sn**ch whatever she can carry out of the yard and elude the dog. I would like to keep her prey to rodents and not duckings.

As a compromise, I picked the best eight of the bunch and put them in the incubator. Some eggs were developing, and others were damaged or sterile. A week later, and all eight are developing well! Let me know if you are interested in adopting ducklings about three weeks from now, hahaha.

I said I wasn't going to get anymore pets, but I couldn't resist these little cuties. Red wigglers are my new slime babies, complete with their own apartment that adds levels as the population grows! At first they didn't seem to be thriving, then I saw some tiny pale wigglers, and I knew they were laying eggs and hatching babies, which will be the future of healthy soil.
