Sip on This: You've bought this amazing wine you tasted. Now, what glass should you use? Experts have found that the shape of the glass can concentrate the wine's aroma, which can enhance the varietal characteristics of your wine. The mid section of the glass is considered the bowl. The bowl of the glass holds the space between the wine and the lip of the glass. This is where the alcohol vaporizes at the wine’s surface and aromas are released. These aromas can impact the tasting profile of the wine as it opens up. Usually white wine glasses have a smaller bowl to help them maintain their temperature, while red wine glasses have a larger bowl to enhance this aroma. For white wines, you want to look for smaller mouth glasses so your whites don't oxidize as quick, keeping the flavor crisp and clean.
Red wines need to have rounder bowls and open mouths for broader surface area for oxidation. This is how your reds become nice and smooth, and bleed that beautiful aroma. There are also Universal glasses, these generally have stems, wide bowls, and slightly tapered rims. Perfect for any wine on any day.
Now thinking stemmed or non stemmed? Well, this can depend on your wine you are drinking. Stemmed glasses require you to hold the glass. This raises the temperature of the wine in the glass, no white wine drinker wants that! Albeit, for a casual glass of wine, stemless glasses can be the perfect option.
All in all, you really only need two or three styles of glasses in your collection. Each person can have a personal preference and ultimately you should feel free to drink wine out of whichever you like.
Want the perfect sip? Finding the right wine glass will essentially lead to you enjoying your wine to its fullest potential!
