Public service announcement!!!

Some of the comments I read on my fireworks training were not kind and all I ask is that you remain kind on my page. You will be getting banned. Mental health is important to me and it's not good for me to read messages that are in any way negative. About me: I am a dog trainer with 10 plus years experience ! I have worked professionally as a vet technician and as a dog groomer. I have rescued animals and have always owned multiple animals throughout my life since I was young. I have worked closely with many different types of dog trainers and have a wealth of knowledge that I don't mind sharing with you because I spent multiple hours studying and learning on my own. I currently own 3 cats and a dog. I have multiple years of experience working with many different types of animals including but not limited to guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, snakes, gerbils, cats, dogs and horses, and limited exposure to chinchillas, ferrets and fish. I don't mind answering your questions, but I do expect that you stay respectful to me . I had an extreme narcissist for a mother and was abused my entire life in every way possible, so I'm just not going to put up with it. Thank you.

I will let you in on a little secret to how my dog is calm during the fireworks...

Step one: start in May/June with fireworks training. This consists of everyday playing a video on YouTube of fireworks which only lasts a few minutes. Gradually turn the volume up each time, and treat and reward.

Step two: once your dog has this down, and is reacting less and less each time, slowly expose them to fireworks in a car but at a safe distance.

Step 3: full exposure. This consists of staying at a safe distance, like how I'm at a field, but not near the neighborhoods, or anywhere that known fireworks are going to be, ( look this up online to see if they are going to be nearby) treat, reward praise.

If your dog is stressed at any time, back off and give them the chance to flee to a safe space. In this case, he was on a long lead, and had the chance to go to the car at any time.

Tip: Keep the sessions short and don't overexpose.

High blood pressure is such a pain. Today I had two elevated readings. One was 168/72, the second was 157/88. It's also hard when you have generalized anxiety disorder and don't know whether this is an oncoming panic attack or if this is something I truly need to keep a closer eye on. I called the doctor and he said it's not too bad for now, continue my blood pressure medicine and keep an eye on it. I take so many medications already, I just don't need any more.
