It’s National Fire Prevention Week!
The best way to protect your pet in case of a fire? Be ready before it happens. Most pets panic when alarms sound, so having a plan could save their life. Take a few minutes this week to make sure your pup is protected. ❤️🐾
✅ Fire Safety Tips for Dog Owners
1. Include your dog in your escape plan and practice it.
- Know where your dog usually hides or sleeps so you don’t waste time searching.
- Fire alarms can be terrifying to dogs, so they’re very likely to run, hide, or try to escape when it sounds. Knowing their favorite spots helps you find them quickly.
- Make sure your dog is used to being handled quickly and gently in new situations, so you can move them safely if needed.
2. Keep leashes, carriers, and grab-and-go pet gear near exits.
Keep an extra leash near your main door so you can hook your dog quickly. Store a small evacuation kit with food, water, medications, medical records, a photo of your dog, and a blanket.
3. Make sure your dog has ID and a microchip.
Ensure tags have your current contact information. A microchip adds extra protection if your dog’s collar comes off.
4. Use a pet alert window decal.
Place a sticker near your main entry showing how many pets are inside. If everyone’s safely out, write “Evacuated” across it.
5. Pet-proof your home to prevent fires.
- Keep pets away from open flames like candles and fireplaces. Use flameless candles instead.
- Cover or secure electrical cords to prevent chewing.
- Never put flammable items such as dish towels, grocery bags, pizza boxes or paper on top of the stove.
- Remove or protect stove knobs so pets can’t accidentally turn burners on.
- Unplug space heaters and turn off appliances before leaving the house.
6. Use monitored smoke detectors.
Monitored alarms can alert emergency services even if you’re not home. Test smoke detectors regularly and replace batteries twice a year.
7. Never delay your own safety to rescue pets.
If the fire is spreading, get yourself and your family out first. Let firefighters know pets are inside. They’re trained and equipped to help.
