Happy July 4! While this is a fun day for humans, gerbils like all pets can find fireworks frightening. Be sure your little friends are securely in their cages with a safe nest to hide in before the show starts in order to ensure the best and happiest holiday for everyone.

We are still retired for the foreseeable future. So is anyone in South Florida (or as north as Orlando for a delivery fee) still interested in gerbils?! A new breeder just started down there! Mel's Neighborhood Rodents

A lovely artist featured hamsters in their most recent work. The message is strongly similar for gerbil and other rodent owners alike. You’re purchasing a life! Make sure you’re prepared to love your furbaby furever. 💕

Where do gerbils come from? Now you know!

ARE GERBILS FROM THE GOBI DESERT?

We say it so often that it must be true, gerbils are from the desert. That’s not actually completly true. They are from the Mongolian Steppes a type of arid grassland, not the sandy dunes of the Gobi Desert.

Here we see the natural range of Mongolian Gerbils (orange) and the Gobi Desert (yellow). Although there is some overlap on the outer edges of the Gobi Desert, the vast majority of Mongolian Gerbils do not live in the Gobi Desert, at all. Keep in mind that deserts can change shape annually depending on the weather.

Gerbils do not have long spindly legs, big ears, nor do they hop along. Those traits are common to desert rodents like Jerboa and other types of jirds.

Although our companions do live in an arid part of the world, not all deserts are rolling sand dunes.

Why is this important? People think of deserts as HOT places and they can not tolerate high heat. Gerbils can over heat pretty easily. If they are very hot they may lay on the bottom of a glass tank. They may also get really greasy fur, which is why you should offer sandbaths more often during the summer months. If your gerbils seems to be hot its best to help them cool off. A simple and easy way to do this is by using a cooling stone that chinchillas use to keep cool. These are just small slabs of granite. They are great for gerbils to lay on to cool off. They do not need to be refrigerated and you should never freeze a cooling stone.

Remember to only gift an animal that was asked for and prepared for ahead of time, both mentally and financially! And happy holidays to all! 🌟

Please remember that living creatures should not be thought of as gifts this .

So much preparation, research and years of dedication go into sharing your home with an animal.

Do not contribute to already overwhelmed rescues and shelters by ‘gifting’ any animal to someone who may be unprepared and unwilling to care for them for years to come.

Rodents may be seen as low maintenance pets who do not live very long and are therefore less commitment. But this is FAR from true.

Here, you can see the average lifespan for a range of rodents. Some of which may live even longer than stated here.

We must put an end to a culture that treats animals as items, as gifts, and see them as the living creatures they are, deserving of , and homes only.
