From Colorado to Florida, 48 hours in the car round trip was all worth it to see my boys happy at the beach. Dexter became a puppy again jumping in and out of the ocean with Samwise, cautious at the shore to begin with, before finding his confidence to swim out to see his brother and my dad having fun. These boys have no shortage of love to give and entertainment to provide with their silly personalities. Spending 2 weeks with my family is just another reminder of how lucky I am. I’m excited for a lot of exciting opportunities we have because of this platform (stay tuned next week for details on the project I’m most excited about 👀), but in the meantime reflecting on the holidays with family and the boys has me feeling very grateful for you all for continuing to follow us 5 years into this journey sharing my dogs on social media. Today and every day I’m thankful for these two silly buddies. Sharing their unique personalities with over 2 million of yall across our social media accounts is a privilege I don’t take for granted.

I’d like to think Dexter and Samwise are thankful for me feeding and loving them, but I know deep down they are most thankful for sticks

As if these boys couldn’t look more handsome. Our friend over at sent us these custom bandanas that we absolutely love. The vintage patches show off each dog’s personality (and mine) which make these truly special. My pride and my Irish heritage are showcased along with some fun dog-themed patches (the “will sit for snacks” patch is spot on for Dexter). Samwise turned 1 and to celebrate I took him to our favorite ice cream shop in Denver it’s become a tradition for each of the boy’s birthdays to get them a scoop (dog friendly of course).

Samwise’s 9 month growth slideshow:

Month 1: If you’re confused as to why I posted a picture of potato, the Labrador Retriever and potato are close relatives

Month 2: Similar to Benjamin Button, Samwise’s evolution after the potato was becoming a grumpy old man and aging backwards (fun fact Samwise’s name was originally Walter. I thought he looked like a Walter here)

Month 3: The day Samwise met the man who stole him from his Texas farmhouse to drive through 3 states and an altitude gain of 5,280 feet. Samwise started to finally look like a Labrador puppy and enjoyed sleeping 11 out of the 12 hour car drive back home

Month 4: Samwise is starting to learn his name is “Samwise” and not “hey stop that”

Month 5: Samwise started to really develop his personality this month. At this stage his likes are bringing shoes outside to the backyard, stealing socks, and eating books. His dislikes are being told 💩 in the house does not make for lovely decoration

Month 6: Samwise has become self-aware and recognizes himself in the mirror. Samwise wonders why this human spends copious amounts of time looking at the mirror despite being a solid 4/10 (on a good day)

Month 7: Samwise started his bulk and followed the “everyday is chest day” routine at the local gym. Samwise becomes the first ever dog to bench press 2 plates on each side.

Month 8: Samwise gained 65lbs in an effort to 1) stop being picked up (didn’t work) and 2) chase his dream of becoming Mr. Olympia, a movie star, and eventually governor of California

As Samwise continues to grow and show more of his personality, the similarities (and differences) between him and when Dexter was a puppy are so fun for me to notice. Not only do they look super similar (1st picture: Dexter, 2nd picture: Samwise), but I wanted to share what I’ve noticed about their personalities:

1. Samwise is WAY more social. He absolutely loves meeting people and will shower strangers with affection. Dexter was (and still is) more reserved, but once he gets to know someone (after the first visit) he becomes a lot more comfortable showing love.

2. Since the day I picked Dexter up, he was comfortable being by himself. If I changed rooms, he’d chill where he was. Samwise is very much a “velcro dog” at this point but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him become more independent because…

3. Samwise is incredibly brave. He was named after one of the bravest fictional characters ever created (Samwise from LotR) and his name is very fitting. This is a personality trait they both share. Seeing how comfortable Dexter was on stage in front of 2,000+ people when we filmed shows how brave he is as well.

4. Dexter is such a well-behaved dog these days, but funny enough Dexter was a troublemaker as a puppy. He destroyed fences in my backyard and even ate through walls. Samwise is more sneaky when it comes to “misbehaving” including stealing my slippers and bringing sticks inside.

5. Finally, they both are very intelligent. They both pick up on new things quickly. Seeing Samwise learn from Dexter is super helpful for training. I can tell Samwise looks up to Dexter and I couldn’t ask for a better role model for Samwise to follow.
