I was asked to go check on a HBC opossum over night. Someone posted a picture on ahnow.com and just left him. No one could get in touch with the finder. I went to the exact coordinates and looked everywhere. By the picture, I knew this sweet opie had little hope with the amount of blood. 😞 i walked the whole neighborhood and finally found him. As much as I didn't want to, I knew i needed to check to make sure it wasn't a female carrying babies. It was a boy and nature's clean up crew had already started their process. Even though chances were slim, it's stuff like that that will keep a rehabber up at night if you just didn't go see for yourself and there was even a .01% chance of helping. If you find an animal still alive, please try to contain it so we can use our resources wisely. We care and worry until we can get some sort of resolution. 🙏

This first group of little ones all kept their elbows off the table and ate like distinguished ladies and gents...the second group still needs work-note you can't even see the food dish. 😝

I shared the hardest thing, but the best thing??? Releasing a healed opossum after 6 weeks of healing. ❤️ I didn't get any pictures because he was gone before I set him down. Like he remembered his home and joyfully took off. I wanted to cry. He came to me with fleas and ticks, weighing less than 3lbs, and an arm totally degloved. He left at 7lbs, healed, no fleas or ticks, and so ready to go. Watching him go back to where he belongs after all he went through just makes all we do as rehabbers worth it.

I only have one incubator and try to keep them separate, but this little boy opie (it's always him) is insistent on find...

I only have one incubator and try to keep them separate, but this little boy opie (it's always him) is insistent on finding big buh buh to snuggle with. They are all eyes closed babies. Once the squirrels open their eyes, I'll move them to a heating pad. 🥰🥰🥰🥰 it's really sweet though because it's literally every 3-4 hrs i have to feed them and every time he's found his way over no matter the obstacles I put out.

When you're the 5th squirrel to show up: sorry, sir, the wait time for a table is about 15min.

I think one of the hardest things I do is trying to search a mangled mom's body for any signs of life after she's been hit by a car. The babies that didn't survive are like scenes from a nightmare. As a rehabber you have to push the images from your head and concentrate on the life you found left...ice cold, crying for mom, and scared. I put them in my shirt next to me to start warming them. Out of 11 babies, 3 were alive...2 being thrown from her. So thankful to the precious caring soul who had the ok to bring mom to me to find the one life still in her pouch. They are lively and I have hope...

A little hydrotherapy for my little Dennis. 💙

Little Dennis update: he has good days and bad. I'm trying to manage his pain with meds and it's a delicate line. He's eating well and has gained 30g. On his good days he moves really well, on his off days he sleeps and doesn't move as well. Just praying each day is a day forward. 🙏

Bug night is always a favorite dinner night! 🦗🦗🦗🦗
