Today is World Zoonoses Day! 🦠
Zoonotic diseases are infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Pets, while offering companionship, can sometimes carry and spread these diseases.
We have provided a list of common zoonotic diseases from pets and some prevention tips. With regular veterinary care, personal hygiene, safe handling, and proper cleaning, you can significantly reduce the risk of contracting zoonotic diseases from pets.
Rabies
Transmission:
Through bites or scratches from infected animals.
Prevention:
Vaccinate pets, avoid contact with wild animals, and seek medical attention if bitten.
Toxoplasmosis
Transmission:
Contact with cat f***s, especially when cleaning litter boxes.
Prevention:
Pregnant women should avoid cleaning litter boxes, wear gloves, and wash hands thoroughly after handling cat litter.
Salmonellosis
Transmission:
Handling reptiles, birds, or their environments.
Prevention:
Wash hands after handling pets, avoid touching face, and maintain good hygiene.
Ringworm
Transmission:
Direct contact with infected animals or contaminated objects.
Prevention:
Maintain good pet hygiene, avoid sharing personal items with pets, and seek veterinary care for infected animals.
Leptospirosis
Transmission:
Contact with urine from infected animals.
Prevention:
Avoid wading in water that might be contaminated, vaccinate pets, and wear protective clothing if exposure is possible.
Tapeworms
Transmission:
Ingestion of fleas carrying
tapeworm larvae.
Prevention:
Control fleas on pets and
maintain good hygiene.
