๐ธ Understanding Resource Guarding: What It Is and How to Address It ๐ธ
Resource guarding โ when a dog protects food, toys, spaces, or people from perceived competition โ is one of the most common behavioral challenges dog owners encounter. In Labradoodles, it is relatively uncommon given their generally sociable temperament, but it does occur and is best addressed early with understanding and patience.
๐พ ๐ Recognizing the Signs
Resource guarding ranges in intensity from mild stiffening and eating faster when approached, to growling, snapping, or lunging. The growl is important communication โ it is your dog's warning system. Punishing a growl removes the warning without removing the underlying anxiety and can escalate behavior dangerously.
๐พ ๐ท The "Trade Up" Technique
Teach your dog that a person approaching their food or toy predicts something even better. Approach calmly, offer a high-value treat, and allow the dog to receive it before touching their item. Over repetitions, your approach becomes a positive predictor rather than a threat.
๐พ ๐ฟ When to Seek Professional Help
If guarding behavior escalates to snapping or biting, or involves children in the household, consult a certified behavior consultant (IAABC-certified) immediately. Guarding behavior that goes unaddressed tends to intensify over time.
Understanding guarding as an anxiety response โ not defiance โ is the foundation of addressing it successfully and compassionately.
