Black Cat Homestead

Black Cat Homestead Just a family trying to grown their own stuff and be more sustainable. We're just getting started; making a lot of mistakes.

Gotta start somewhere...we began with chickens and food crops. Lovers of all things black, be it chickens, tomatoes, or flowers. We got chickens in the spring 2024 when Mel had cancer. Tim and Mel (mostly Tim) built a coop and run while Mel was going through chemo. Our ten "hens" ended up being nine hens and one gigantic Black Copper Marans rooster. We have become chicken people but we still love our four black cats and letting our kiddos run in the woods.

Here's another way to make mash. I figured y'all might want to see an alternative way that's more of an immune boost. It's a really cool way to do it. Fluffy Cluckers Homestead

What does growing plants/homesteading look like with ADHD? Like a ticking tomato time bomb that you randomly find around the house.

It was sticky and veeeery fluid-filled; just waiting for someone to touch it in the wrong way so it could burst rotten tomato everywhere.

This is my friend Jess. She makes really cool breads, pastas, sweet treats (including frozen cookie dough balls that you just pop into the oven). Any CT folks out there should check her shop out. You can even order online. Her holiday menu...suuuuuper good too.

Yall wanna see the super fancy way I make hot mash for the chickens on a cold day? It's riveting. I know, I know. Some folks don't do this kinda stuff but I do enjoy to occasionally pamper our two flocks. One flock (the younger one) loooooves mash. The other flock...not so much. But we will keep trying. It's just their normal feed plus hot water.

Check out my silly attempt at doing a reel. It's sideways and I sound like a do**us but here it is. haha.

Here's me and my dog Diesel. He was moving so he's slightly fuzzy but he's our rescue Great Dane. We were told he is 5 years old and 95 lbs. Instead he was 6.5 and 135 lb. In the last five months with us, he's gained 10-15 pounds (we are cutting back his food and treats a little bit) and he's almost 7 now. Turns out he has the same birthday as me (just after thanksgiving).

He's not the easiest dog to deal with. He loves to eat random stuff that makes him very sick. His prey drive kicks in really hard when a small animal runs in front of him (think ears perking up and him maybe running when a chicken flaps nearby or a cat shoots through the room). But he's pretty good about not actually biting things and he listens when I say NO. He actually listens to me really well. He was clearly mistreated before because when he does something bad, he definitely expects to be hit, which is something we will never do here. Scolding, yes. Hitting him, no. Anyway, I just wanted to show everyone our giant dog.

Yall, we hit over 500 followers! Whaaaat! That's bananas. Here's some photos of Gomez, our White Ameraucana (dominant white from Ermine lines) rooster. He's stark white looking in real life (a bit less yellow than he looks in the photos).

I did not expect to harvest this many tomatoes in November but here we are. I let these go through several potential frosts but tonight it’ll actually get to 32F so I took them off the vines.

Holy spoon tomatoes, Batman! There’s a boatload of spoon tomatoes, small cherry type tomatoes, black icicle tomatoes, and other types of tomatoes. Bowls are by my husband who turns wood stuff (Enchanted_turnings on Instagram) but he’s gonna teach me how to do that soon.

Here's a really interesting video from French Chicks Farm showing the reason to candle allllll the eggs, even if you're not going to incubate them. I hadn't even thought of this but now that I've seen this video, it makes some sense. What do yall think?

Hey folks, my friend Shane is from Jamaica and he’s raising money to help people there rebuild their homes after that horrible hurricane they had. It’s not a random person. I actually know him well and he’s a great guy. So feel free to donate if you want. No biggie if you cannot or just don’t want to.

Hello. My name is Shane Smith. I grew up in the communities of Wils… Shane Smith needs your support for Help Support Families and Rebuild Homes in Jamaica
