After 30 wonderful years, the time has come for me to announce the retirement and closing of our Nature Chest Bird Store in Decatur, Alabama.

This decision has not been an easy one, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to our wonderful customers, friends, and fellow bird lovers who have supported us throughout the years.

The Nature Chest has been more than a store—it has been a community. I have loved sharing my passion for birds, helping you care for your feathered friends, hearing all the funny and wonderful stories of your feathered friends, and building relationships that have meant so much to me

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives and for making The Nature Chest such a special place. Your loyalty, friendship, and support have been the greatest blessing.

As I prepare to close our doors, I would love you to share your own memories, and help us celebrate the incredible journey we've had together.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I will cherish these memories forever.

❤️ With sincere appreciation,

Debra and The Nature Chest Bird Store Family

Always check toys, perches, cages, and anything else your bird comes in contact with or wear and tear and for continued safety

“Safe” Doesn’t Always Mean Safe

We place birds in cages because we love them.
To protect them.
To give them a space that is theirs.

But here’s the part we don’t talk about enough:

Cages are not inherently safe.
They are simply controlled environments, and control has limits.

Inside a cage, a parrot can:
• Become entangled in toy fibers, clips, or frayed ropes
• Panic and injure themselves on bars or perches
• Ingest parts of toys that were “safe”… until they weren’t
• Experience night frights with no one there to intervene
• Get caught in hardware that shifted, broke, or wore down over time

And it happens quietly. Often, when no one is watching.
Because none of us can monitor them 24/7.

Safety isn’t a product you buy. It’s a process you maintain.

No man-made environment is inherently safe for a parrot.
Not cages. Not toys. Not perches. Not us.

And none of it comes with 24/7 monitoring.

Every material can fail.
Every setup can shift.
Every bird can interact with something in a way we didn’t anticipate.

That doesn’t mean we remove enrichment.
It means we stop assuming safety, and start managing risk with intention.

What does that look like?
• Rotating and inspecting toys frequently (not just when they “look” worn)
• Understanding how your individual bird interacts, not just what’s labeled safe
• Designing cages with intention, not convenience
• Removing anything that relies on “they’ll probably be fine.”
• Accepting that even enrichment carries risk, and managing it thoughtfully

This isn’t about fear.
It’s about awareness.
Because the goal isn’t just to give them a life that looks enriched…
It’s to give them one that is.

Our hearts go out to those who lost a beloved companion due to a cage mishap, a toy that stopped being about play, or debris that made its way where it was never intended. We are so sorry.

It’s finally here!

🚨🦜 Poison Prevention Week: Protect Your Bird from Hidden Household Dangers 🦜🚨

It’s Poison Prevention Week—a perfect reminder that many everyday household items can pose serious risks to our feathered companions. Birds are especially sensitive to airborne toxins, certain foods, plants, and common products we may not think twice about.

From nonstick cookware fumes and aerosol sprays to toxic plants and heavy metals, prevention starts with awareness.

The Association of Avian Veterinarians has created a helpful handout:
“Protecting Your Bird from Household Dangers” — designed specifically for bird owners who want to create a safer home environment.

✔️ Easy-to-read guidance
✔️ Practical prevention tips
✔️ Available in multiple languages
✔️ Free to download

Access it anytime on our Bird Owner Resources page:
