As an update, we ended up with over 40 quarts of canned beets! If anyone is interested, they are $6 for pints and $11 for quarts.

Now, we move into tomatoes. This cluster of 10 beefsteak tomatoes was just one branch on the plant and they all ripened at about the same time. What a welcome into tomato season!

Last thing, we hope everyone is doing well and avoiding the many industrial food recalls. There have been so many and more come each day. Buy local and know your farmer. You and your food are cared about by most local small farmers and we rely on your health to keep your business. Stay healthy!!

This weekend's project: Beets! We harvested a wagon-full this year. Here's the biggest Cylindra Beet that Sam grew. These beets grow longer and in a cylindric shape, easy to slice and can.

New Skill level achieved.
Yesterday Steve attended a grafting class at Nash Nurseries in Owosso. This was his first Apple tree graft from the class. It is a Kingston Black apple scion on an MM111 rootstock that ended up being 9" tall. They had a wide selection of scions to choose from, but not of Northern Spys; his preferred variety. He landed on this variety, which is a bittersharp cider apple from England. He did find out that it is a more challenging tree to maintain. Nonetheless, with luck this will be part of next year's addition to the orchard. He did enjoy hearing about people's amazing monster trees...the ones with 52 to 100+ apple varieties on one full size tree. That seems like a lifetime achievement tree. He got a new goal, too.

Spring is in full swing on the farm! We did a big coop cleanout, have been keeping a close eye on the fruit trees, planted seedlings in the garage, and started planting our raised beds. It's a busy and challenging time of year on the farm, but a fun one!
