The coolest part of this video is truly the end. To the naked eye the fact that Dolly hit the deer and then kept working towards the lake in a DRY, ROCKY creek bed may look like sheās a total dud. But, to those familiar with scent work this is a cool clip!
This buck had been gut shot the evening prior; nearly 24 hours. He had been pushed a little and made his way down to water, as they will. He obviously began backtracking up the creek bed before he gave it up.
These dogs do NOT mind their eyes. They work their noses. She had hit the buck and then kept following his scent trail down towards the stock tank and then came back to him, but she knew the line hadnāt ended with him. Not in her noseās eye anyway.
Duke is the muscle, and has a great nose of his own, but if Dolly says it went this way, itās the gospel. Beagles scientifically smell in parts per BILLION, while most other breeds smell in parts per million.
She certainly has not been replaced by the bigger dog. She is still a very integral part of our operation, our first tracking dog, and forever our namesake.
