ATTENTION, THIS BALLOT MEASURE WILL MOST CERTAINLY MAKE IT TO THE NOVEMBER BALLOT!
Oregon's Initiative Petition 28 (IP28), or the "PEACE Act," seeks to reclassify most hunting, fishing, and animal agriculture as animal abuse by removing legal exemptions. If passed, it would ban slaughterhouses, livestock breeding, and many traditional animal-related activities in Oregon, impacting the agricultural economy and personal food sources.
Key Impacts of IP28 (Opponent Perspectives):
Criminalization: Hunting, fishing, trapping, and farming could become criminal offenses, say Oregon Hunters Association.
End of Livestock Industry: The measure would effectively end cattle farming and ranching in the state, according to the Oregon Cattlemen's Association.
Economic Impact: The Oregon Farm Bureauargues it threatens the state's agricultural industry and economy.
Cultural & Daily Life Shift:Opponents argue the petition, which aims to protect animals from any intentional injury, could force massive changes in diet and lifestyle.
The initiative, which requires 117,173 signatures to qualify for the November ballot, is currently gathering signatures and has not yet officially qualified.
