Leashing walking is one of the most challenging things to teach your dog, even if they AREN’T reactive or fearful. 👀
There is no one trick or tool that can make loose leash walking happen. (Don’t let ads and the internet fool you.😅)
The fundamental skills needed before you begin
1️⃣Engagement- Does your dog know to look to you for direction and guidance? Do they confidently check-in with you?
2️⃣Impulse control- Does your dog have the ability to ‘ignore’ things that they want? Have you made yourself exciting enough to your dog?
3️⃣Leash pressure- Is your dog able to follow the direction of the leash?
Teach these skills in isolation, and then progressively in enviorments of increasing difficultly; the living room, the backyard, the driveway, then one block of the neighborhood, ect. 📚
Going for a walk, is the final exam. Teach the skills well before testing your dog. I know how exciting walking with your dog is. It’s my favorite part of the day, but it will be more enjoyable if we can do it symbiotically. 🐾
