When teaching or reinforcing your dogs behavior, what should you do immediately after your dog preforms the correct action? 🤨

A.) go get a treat and give it to them
B.) repeat the command
C.) mark and reward the behavior right away
D.) nothing

If you said ‘C- mark and reward behavior’ you are correct!

Dogs only understand a consequence within 1-2 seconds after their behavior. In other words, AS SOON AS they do the right things, we need to be rewarding them. This is why having a well conditioned marker word, like “yes” is fundamental. ✔️

If your dog is make the wrong choices; stealing food, peeing in the house or barking at triggers, it is not their fault. It is our job to manage the environment better, and teach the expectations more clearly. If your dog does these things, and then seems guilty afterwards it’s mostly likely because they’re scared of your reaction not because they understand the problem. 🤍

Humans and dogs alike, are more willing and able to repeated desired behaviors if they clearly understand the expectations and are compensated for doing so. Dogs like paychecks and hearing “I’m proud of you. You did a great job too!” 🤗

Why wait for it?
You know the trigger is there.
You know your dog has seen it.

And yet many people wait.
They wait for the fixation to start.
They’ll wait for the muscle tension.

Waiting for that extreme arousal and excitement.

Why? Because hope is involved.

Maybe this will be the time they don't escalate.🤞
Maybe this will be the walk where everything finally falls into place.

But if we're honest, most people already know where it's heading.

➡️What if the biggest opportunity to influence that outcome was earlier than that?
At the point your dog JUST noticed the trigger.

Before emotions begin to escalate.

Now that Jules’ cuteness got your attention, we’d like to take a break from dog training to share a PSA‼️

There have been numerous posts recently, of missing or loose rabbits in our area, from Berwick to Sellinsgrove. 😭

Even though there are wild rabbits, it is not safe or humane for domestic rabbit breeds to be left outside to survive on their own. It’s typically not even recommended that domestic rabbits live outside at all. 🐰

We understand that there are situations in which rehoming pets is necessary. If you find yourself in that situation the best thing to do is contact a local rescue, if you are unable to secure placement with friends or family.
